I have a group of four fish. For some reason every time I try to add another they disappear after a couple of months. Not sure why. Yes I quarantine them for 30 to 60 days. Maybe I can’t add another to this established group? I have a clown, a fire fish, yellow assessor and a hawkfish.

Try a damsel. They are definitely hardy and can be a bit bossy.

I'm a big fan of blue/green chromis. Active fish that usually doesn't end up being an issue like some damsels. What size is your tank? I typically like having more than one. Also, what kind of clown do you have? I have a GIANT clarkii that will harass and kill anything that I put in my tank. I'd like to get her out but my Daughter loves that fact that the giant clown will nip at your fingers when you touch the top of the water.

It’s a Ocellaris clown

I never actually see the new fish getting
harassed.

Answer may be adding 2 to 3 fish at a time. Aggression gets spread out that way.

With a 55 gallon you are not likely max'ed out ......

PS Would think hard before adding damsels .. they end up big ugly and bullies most of the time. Chromis are the exception .....

My default would be to say clown, but seeing as you have one that may not prove to be helpful. Typically fish in the damsel family are very hardy. Thinking outside the box, triggers are aggressive and very hardy fish. Typically most carnivores tend to be as long as you avoid very young ones. Only negatives are it may outgrow your tank and add their own level of aggression. One nice thing is you can catch them relatively easily with a fish trap. If you suspect aggression, these guys can really hold their own.

I have damsel in my 75 gallon, a saphire and a Talbot, both model citizens. My banggai and chromis are a the A holes in the tank. Not bad enough to remove them but they are the enforcers when I add something new.

I agree 55g should be able to add more, and it's possible the clown could be claiming territory, though single and ocellaris are usually not too bad.
Your hawkfish could be bullying newcomers.

I do agree adding more than one spreads aggression and helps.

Royal gramma usually can hold their own ok, tailspot blenny another choice, lawnmower blenny would handle themselves fine usually and also a good grazer for that size tank.

Royal Gramma is good choice ... But think twice before adding a Dottyback .... Beautiful fish but usually the last you can add ... Should be called Devilfish

If you go with a trigger .... Snails and shrimp will be lunch at some point. But Huma Huma trigger grows slower and maxs out at 6 to 8 inches most of the time.

Wouldn’t I see them getting bullied? Because I never do.

What do you think about a coral beauty or flame angel?

Snowflake moray. That’ll hold its own and there are very few accounts of it attacking other fish. Also very hardy and look awesome.

I really like my orchid dottyback, very peaceful even with new additions. That being said, IDK how it would do with the firefish.
