I got a fluval evo 13.5 with dry rock and dry sand. I have decided to start cycling with the turbo fritz 900 but i dont know which ammonia source i have to use (dead shrimp or ammonia chloride from dr tim) and how long do i need to dose these.

Welcome! Glad you joined. Way back when I started, people peed in tank for ammonia but no one talks about doing that any more.

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:

Welcome! I like the no chemicals approach. I use uncured rock. The die off provides an almost instant cycle. Deal with hitchhikers later. Most are good guys anyway. Good luck either way you go!

The differences between decaying food or shrimp and chemical ammonia is the time it takes for the ammonia level to build and the difference in organics and phosphate created. If doing an old school cycle, I'd use use ammonia AND then start ghost feeding the tank with a little flake food. This builds the ammonia level quickly to jump start the cycle process and then provides the organics and phosphate needed to complete the cycle.
