Ok so im having a big issue. I have a nice little collection of chalices that were all doing great up until about a month ago. I recently moved and set up a new 200 gallon tank. For the first 3 months all went really well. Chalices grew like weeds, sps was happy. In the last month though my chalices are taking a hit. THey are dying back on teh skeleton at the edges. The strange part is that the feeding sweepers are out all the time. My other lps seems to be doing ok as well. As far as the tank, all parameters are good. I think if anything the tank may be too clean for Lps. Sps still has full polyp extension all the time. Around the time this became an issue I anchored down my rock using the 2 part epoxy by DG aquatics. It was kind of a messy process and alot of the cloudy mixture from the epoxy got in the tank.
A little more about the tank. it has 2 skimmers rated for 150 gallons, i used to run carbon and gfo but have since this began taken off the gfo thinking it might help ( it hasn't). I also use a UV sterilizer. other than that it runs LED"s and i have good flow. Im looking for someone who has maybe had a similar experience or someone that might be able to identify the issue

Tank parameters? Salinity? Chalices like high magnesium, keep extra high especially when they are receding

I dont have similar experience nor am i too experience but according to the bit of research I have done on UV Sterilizer's it seems people tend to recommend not to run them on reef's. If that has anything to do with what is going on I dont know. But if everything else seems fine, possibly try keeping it off for a week and monitor the tank?

Good luck.

Some of the best reef tanks I've seen have ran UV, but it does sound like they're starving to me.

Are you feeding them?

+1 they sound starved and a UV could contribute to this if it is also killing potential food in the column that the chalices would normally capture.

Do you directly feed the chalice when polyps out?

I feed directly once every other week or so. Should I turn off the uv ?

There are several factors, that could be causing this. Moving tanks is always stressful to the system, removing the carbon and GFO, is going to shift parameters and raise your PO4 and NO3, and with the epoxy, if you used large amounts, it could cause stress as there are chemicals in the epoxy. As for the UV, that is not the issue, i would continue to run it.

If they are receding from the edge, but are still healthy, something caused them to stress and an infection may have set in. Hopefully what ever caused it has been corrected, but in order to save the receding pieces, best action is to cut the receding areas off with a band saw, followed by a dip in lugols or something like Melafix, which I really like. Good luck and keep us posted...

Yeah I've been fragging like crazy. It is a remedy for a short time but they soon start receding again. I ran a poly filter to try and get rid of all chemicals. I just don't know at this point.

Could be....."Around the time this became an issue I anchored down my rock using the 2 part epoxy by DG aquatics. Have you been doing a good amount of water changes?

How about a little more info on the lights? Were they under LEDs previously?

It also sounds to me like they're hungry. I would feed a little more frequently as well and see if you start to notice a difference.

I would say feeding them no more than twice a week would correct the problem.

With the enough feeding and proper light (even with parama a little out of norm) they should recover without an issue. IMO.

I currently have a Miami hurricane chalice that began receding under an AI sol nano. I moved it under t5s and started feeding it more and it is slowly recovering. Very slowly. It wasn't getting fed enough.

I think feeding might be the issue. Unfortunately in my tank feeding is difficult. The strange thing is that I have never had to feed before. And that they were growing fast when I first set the tank up and I wasn't feeding at all

Here is an update. I took all of my equipment apart for a maintenance check to make sure the problem wasn't a rusty pump ....... No issues found. THe chalices are really starting to recede quickly and im just at a loss. The recession did start right around the time I used the two part epoxy but I have been doing water changes of 20% every week and it seems to make no difference. I have checked and rechecked all of my levels and eerythign is good. I also installed a polyfilter to hopefully catch anything nasty and let it run for 2 weeks........ still receeding faster than ever.
