Need Advice on Waterbox 100.3 Equipment List

I will be purchasing a Waterbox 100.3 and other equipment for the build today. I already have the following equipment:

- 2 EcoTech Marine Radion XR15w G3 Pros with RMS’
- 2 EcoTech Marine VorTechs MP10wQDs
- 1 EcoTech Marine Battery Backup
- Neptune Systems Apex
- Neptune Systems WXM
- Tunze Osmolator 3152 Osmolator

I will be ordering the following equipment:

- Waterbox 100.3 with cabinet and sump
- 2 Eheim Jager 200w heaters
- 1 additional mesh filter sock
- 1 additional felt filter sock
- 1 Neptune Systems COR-15 Pump for the return

The VorTechs are rated for glass thickness of 3/8”, but they should be fine on the Waterbox’s 1/2” if I use the cord mounts that come with them.

Does my equipment list seem sufficient for a ~71g display and ~25g sump? I will get a skimmer and other larger purchases as I save for them.

I would definitely make a skimmer a high priority with a tank that size.

Even with a very small load? I’m going to have two naked Ocellaris clowns for a while before I add anything additional because the cost of everything up to this point has my wife a little annoyed. Oops.

I would say yes, they are great filters. Everyone I’ve talked to said the skimmer should be one of your first purchases. Especially if you’re not running any other type of filter (HOB, media, carbon, etc)

If you have good live rock and live sand you might be alright without one right away but you’ll want some type of filtration for sure

I have no doubt that I will be getting one; it may just take a few months. I have a few MarinePure bricks that will provide a ton of surface area for bacteria. That should get me through a few months. I planned on saving for a skimmer, but maybe Santa will bring me one this year. Ha

I'm not sure the MP10s will have enough flow for you. And the sooner the better with a skimmer but it is not absolutely necessary. Some have gone months without one. Just watch your nutrient levels closely as they could rise rapidly.

I agree that a skimmer isn’t absolutely necessary..... but..... yes you should make it a priority to get one . Even a gently used one is better than none. You’d be surprised what you can find for a very reasonable price.

I wonder what the manufacturer’s policy would be if anything was wrong with it and needed to be fixed or replaced.

FWIW I have a tank that is almost identical to yours and I have not run a skimmer for almost 3 years. It's not without its challenges, but easily doable.
