^^This exactly. I've had problems mixing firefish with certain pistol shrimp. Firefish get ambushed at night by them if their hidey hole is too close to the shrimp's burrow. Easy meal, I guess.

His hole is right above pistol shrimp burrow. Pistol shrimp was only added Thursday though. Can it develop this quick?

A pistol punch is no joke. It causes massive tissue damage which would lead to serious swelling and necrosis if not treated.

Also should add that the pistol was nearly clawless. They had started growing back though.

The goby in the top right pic was paired with the wrong type of shrimp. That was just a day or two after. So your firefish got off easy.

Off hand comment but I hate that website! So hard to search, it finds things that are no longer on that page, and it's so cumbersome to read! So frustrating too because there's a plethora of information there!

I agree! I just knew they used that goby pic for the headline. It would have taken forever to find the story again if not.

Back to the OP. I would get that guy fixed up. I do think he has a good chance. Then figure out what to do about a possible shrimp/ fish conflict.

That won't cure him. The Epson salt should be available at a 24 hour pharmacy. Removing the swelling may give him the most relief right now.

I think @Naiad is on to something about your firefish getting pistol whipped... er I mean punched.

He is going to need antibiotic treatment (Kanaplex or Furan-2) in a QT in order to make a recovery.

Might be worth a shot, but Melafix is generally only useful for mild infections. Works wonders for FW fish though.

Do you think it would keep a worse infection at bay until better meds can be found? If it is from the pistol there may not even be too severe an infection yet just pure trauma and swelling.

1 tablespoon per 5 gallon if I am remembering right. Humblefish will correct me if not. Just be sure it is plain. As much as I love lavender salt baths I'm not sure fish do.

Epsom Salt: Treats eye and other injuries. Popeye in one eye usually means injury, but popeye in both eyes usually denotes a bacterial infection requiring antibiotic treatment. Cloudy eye can be a bacterial infection or flukes.

How To Treat - 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of aquarium water. Repeat only once, if necessary. Use only “USP” grade Epsom salt.

Pros - Reef safe, as Epsom salt is just magnesium sulfate.

Cons/Side Effects - The effects of excessive sulfate in a reef aquarium are not fully known.

I have had a lot of luck with their quick responses and lots of knowledge. However, after reading through their threads, they are quick to chastise about grammar, spelling, uploading knowledge, and overall intelligence it seems. Sometimes it is to the point I feel sorry for the poor person just asking for advice, and they get beat up by their lack of knowing how to capitalize scientific names! Grammar errors are annoying, but constantly pointing out other's errors get to be condescending! Not everyone has a PhD!!!
