They're common in new tanks if they hitchhike in. They tend to die out on their own after a little while

Exactly what they told you. They are feeding on excess nutrients.

They will go away in time. Our nano had them for about a 3 months then never seen them again.

They really won't hurt anything but there are ways for them to make it into the tank. They will go away on there own.
