Hey, so i'm working on setting up my first reef tank, and i've been working last couple of days on the rock work (outside the tank). I just put together something that i liked and i would love some feedback on it from you guys...

Also here's a link to a video if you want the 3d view :

Anyway, any feedback would be highly appreciated, keep in mind that in the end i would add some smaller rocks to the seems and epoxy everything together...

I love the look you're going for ! My only suggestion is maybe raise the right side shelf rock / atol higher into the water column by putting a larger rock underneath it so that it was at horizontal height with the middle " rock spire " I think you would enjoy the way it would add depth to that side of the tank where there is so few rocks with corals growing out of it into the open water it would be a sight to see, Just my .02 though :D

Thanks a lot! Actually i find it very hard to locate that flat piece at the right. Its a real nice piece but it doesn't seem to fit in the more "natural" look of the big rockwork...

I agree....I would probably remove the flat piece all together. The rest of the aquascape looks natural while that piece looks manufactured. Maybe just make a smaller island with more natural looking rocks? Other than that it looks fantastic :-)

I think it looks good in there adds a touch of style preference to the scape when most people just shove as much rock as they can fit in a tank I have always preferred the minimalistic look over the " rock wall " I will try and find a picture of what I'm talking about do you can see what I mean with a visual reference it's hard to explain lol.

Ah here we go something similar to what I was trying to explain this isn't the exact picture I had in mind, but its close in relation to the way it would look if the coral colony was to be you're shelf rock

Yea i see what you mean but i think it looks natural because its a natural looking rockwork with a beautiful coral on it...

I would much rather have that in the tank and not a rock that looks like a coral... Don't you think?

Well you gotta think long term when planning a rockscape cause eventually that is what it will start to look like when corals grow on it. I love everything about shelf rock and I'm currently using a huge piece of shelf rock to create an overhang/shaded/refuge area in my tank for fish to hide from intensive lights or super strong flow if they wish, aswell as maximizing the surface area for corals growth, can't go wrong with that IMO either that or a small column would look aesthetically pleasing to that corner of you're tank no doubt. Look up images of stacked Rock columns/pillars growing with sps corals attached to them you will be amazed at the depth it provides you're tank instead of everything growing straight up like they would on you're left side of the tank you could mount them to grow out to the sides horizontally which looks incredible once mature

I think it looks sick. All of it. Raising the flat rock on right a bit could be a good idea but I wouldn't raise it to much. The corals growing on top of it will give it the same look in the end and it gives a lot of space to grow. Allowing room underneath for fish to swim under it would give a cool effect.
Looks great!
