I have a new 20gal with 15 lbs of live rock , no sump, with hob filter. The filter came with bio rings. Do I need them in my filter? Can they just sit in my tank somewhere hidden? I would like to free up some room in filter for carbon.

No you don't need them you have live rock

Agreed, in reefing anything that adds surface area is wasteful of your time bc that's covered in excess already and now requires more cleaning for the new space. Use it for plant growth or adsorption media

I'm aware of high surface area bricks for reduction of nitrate but we don't see that phenomena consistently in reefing using the rings or other broken up small pore media. For all the claims about siporax balls reducing nitrate, they specifically have not reduced nitrate in my systems where they were tried. They were covered in detritus and needed cleaning like any other media. Measurable denitrification is inconsistent at best imo.

If I move them or take them out should I rinse them, or shake them off in my tank water to leave the bacteria or just pull them out?
