So I bought a used apex locally and the probes are a mess. They are coated in crap and I Wana clean them but I’ve heard these things are very sensitive. What’s a safe way to clean these probes without messing them up? Is citric acid safe?

Have they been out of water and dried? If so i think you are likely in market for new probes.

As for cleaning i just use soft cotton towel....but i never had any that look like that. The sensitive part is just the "bulb" doen at the tip. The rest of it take a firm bristle toothbrush(or maybe in your case a hacksaw) to them.

Yes they are dried and have been out of water. You don’t think citric acid or vinegar would help?

I am not an expert on probes, but have always seen instructions and heard that if they dry out that can ruin them. New ones are always shipped with a cap that keeps them moist. Never tried to use one that had previously dried though so just how important keeping them moist is I cant really say firsthand.
