thinking about finally taking the plunge and buying my own RODI system. I’m getting realllllly tired of lugging buckets of water to my petco, filling them up, lugging them home. Especially when their system breaks and I have to buy jug water for an absurd amount of money.

I’ve been looking at the BRS 5 stage premium plus model but keep getting torn between the 75 and 100gpd models.

I currently only have a 40 breeder but plan to upgrade once my fiancée and I move out of our apartment into a new place (haven’t started looking yet to provide a timeline). So I think the 75gpd would be just fine for now. However, I like the I like the option of being able to upgrade the tank and not having to upgrade to RODI if I get the 100gpd.

The other thing I’m contemplating is getting the water saver upgrade kit with it. If I get the 75gpd and water saver kit I’ll be able to get around 150 which is more than enough. With the 100gpd I would be close to 200 which is more than i need. Not sure which way to go...need some feedback!

Anyone have he water saver kit and think it’s worth it? I like the idea of lowering waste water amounts.

Sorry for the long post!

You can always upgrade later to the water saver, just add another 75gpd membrane, it will take your waste water and re-process.

I'd go for the smaller model but invest into a booster pump with automatic shutoff. At higher pressure, membrane works better and there's less water waste.

I have a 180 gallon tank and use a 90 gpd unit and it works for me. Most of us make enough RODI water to store for a while. You’ll be happy with any of the units you described. I use spectrapure but you can’t go wrong with BRS units either.

The BRS unit is a good unit. I have the 5 stage 75 gpd. I added the water saver kit since Im on rain water for my home. The waste water goes back into our rainwater tank now but did not at first. Thats why the add-on kit was purchased. Now its really not needed. To push water thru 2 membranes requires more water pressure so a booster pump might be needed. I have a 600+ gallon system and see no need to get a unit that makes more gpd.

I have the brs 6 stage plus. Its produces and cleans a good amount of water but when im trying to fill my two brutes(37g each) it takes time. I went and bought the water saver upgrade and it is so worth it. Just make sure you have a high enough psi. The only tad downside is you produce slightly higher tds going to the di resin which uses the di resin faster. I would also add another di chamber if your waters tds in high. Can you see your city's water report? This is really important.

I have the brs 7 stage 75 with the water saver which puts it a 150. Without the water saver you get roughly 33% clean water with 66% being waste. With the saver you get 66% clean water with 33% waste (per talking to them) So the water saver upgrade is a no brainer for a future purchase. Clips right on the other system with brackets, 2 line to splice in with parts included.

I do have a booster pump on my house water line, city had 40 psi, I like to run at 80 psi, so I can not comment on the pressure difference.

I'm getting around 5.5 to 6 gal per hour.

I’ve tried looking for this before but not really sure what to be looking for. I have handheld tds meter and tested tap water. TDS was around 220 if I remember correctly. I’ll test again when I get home

Top cylinder is the water saver kit and the 2 clip on brackets that hold it. Splices in the existing line.

My city water tests at 160-175 depending on time for some reason. I'm at 2 tds out of the 5th stage, 0 tds out of 6 and 7 stages

Ah kinda didn’t think about the pressure loss with an additional membrane. I’ll have to see what my water pressure is

Dang I might need more than the 5 stage then huh?

I run a 50g/per day RO membrane (no booster pump) and it can handle my water requirements of ato water and water changes. I've got a 360g tank and two 55g tanks. I'd spend the extra money on dual canister DI resin.

Not necessarily. I run a BRS 4 stage and start with about 220 tds water. You want to find out if your water has chloramine in it. Go to your city or towns water department website nad look for their annual report.

I just went and checked my tds sensors, I had given you bad info in the post before. Im at 2 tds out of the 4th stage, 0 tds out of 5,6, and 7.
I appreciate you double checking! Thanks!

What is your budget? I am using the Spectrapure MaxCap Performance Plus. Not sure if your paying for your water, but with a 1:1 waste ration the extra money up front will be paid back in saved water bills. Vertex also makes a nice little unit with a 1:1 waste ratio. Both of these units come with the booster pump. Not sure BRS units do. So keep that in mind when buying. A pump is another $100 on top of the unit.

Looking to spend $250-$300. I’ll take a look at spectrapure and vertex

i believe one of the most important part of a reef tank is great water to start with , this might be a place to spend xtra cash on

Couldn't agree more. And like I said, a unit with a low 1:1 waste ratio will pay for itself in no time when compared to others that are 2 or 3:1...
