Ok trying to convert one of my old brackish tanks over to a reef tank, but can't clean it. It's a 100gal long tank that has been sitting outside unprotected for about 6 years. Had to take the tank down originally due to a cross country move and never had the time to do any cleaning on it. When it was taken down it had some algae growth in it and for the most part I got it out, but there seems to be an entire layer that was underneath all the dead and still growing algae that I can't get off. I have tried using a razorblade to get it off but it glides over it lime it's not there, tried some commercial algae killer used on ships but it did not work either. I know I shouting have used it, but I'm more concerned with getting the glass cleaned than chemicals right now and plan on doing a lot of washes before I even set the tank up for cycling. I even tried burning it out with a lighter and it still did not work. Has anyone had any problems like this before? The tank is a double pane design, but it's not between the panes since I can take them appart. It was my dad's homemade one that uses 2 layers of 1/8th in sheets that can be taken apart be taking the outer tank sides off of the main tank. Could the glass be naturally stained or micro growth writhing the surface of the glass?
