Hello,

I'm currently having an issue with some type of algae and need some help identifying what type it is. My tank is 150 gallon with 30 gallon sump, it's been up for about 18 months. This is my first reef tank and have ran the tank from the beginning as an ULNS system because all i read about nutrients causing issues. I could never get any nitrate reading and phosphates would usually read around .012 with the hanna ULR checker.

After reading several posts on the R2R forum about low nutrients possibly causing dinos I've dosed NaNO3 and Na3PO4 and brought the levels up to 8ppm NO3 and .1 ppm NO4. It's been about a week and so far haven't seen any changes in the tank other than the corals having more color. It's also growing over the coralline algae on my overflows but nothing on the rock. I've attached some pictures I took under the microscope also.

Thanks

Looks like dino welcome to Reef2reef. We're all in this together

Thanks , that’s what I was afraid of. :( And thanks for the greeting. Well met!

I beat it and you can too. Read the the first post of the link I sent you. Also ask loads of questions. :D

Trying to figure out my algae also... It looks like yours in pictures but trying to figure out how to see it in a micoscope... I scooped out some sand and looked at it... It looks like green hair algae in my microscope.. I dont see the same thing you see in your microscope. But i have the dirty brown looking sand with lights on... gets green without lights on. Its starting to go all over my rocks but its not like Long hair algae.... It also blows right off with a turkey baster. I dont know if its just regular green algae or what. :(

I also put some in a cup sprayed some peroxide in there.... didnt notice anything change in color so im guessing not cyano either?

Can regular green hair algae like coat your sand looking like diatoms to the naked eye?
