So I went to my lfs about 5 months ago and got a coral that had red slime on it at the time i did not see it present till introduced into my tank after I saw it i took it back but as I was taking it out of my tank some of it came off and about a week later was in my tank spreading everywhere i then got some new power heads to add more flow siphoned as much out as possible used red slime begone or whatever it's called turned off skimmer and left lights out for 72 hrs after everything went back on did 40% water change and dosed carbon and changed out all sponges and filters and it will seem to be at bay for the next month then blam comes right back again and again have had to do this about 4 times now and is now back again and since I'm new to this forum figured maybe someone could help out and shed some light for me on the situation lol

I used this once with great success. Only had to treat once, but then brought it back into my system on a frag I bought :/

Basic Instructions to kill Red Slime Algae (cyanobacteria) in Marine Aquaria
also works on green slime algae in Freshwater Aquaria

1. Clean off as much red slime algae as you easily can before treatment.

2. Remove Activated Carbon, phosphate remover and other chemical media from the filtration system and turn off the protein skimmer (if you have one)

3. Put 1 tablet/packet Erythromycin (200mg) per 30 gallons in the tank. The product can be found under the name "Maracyn" at most local fish stores. (premix in tank water for easier mixing)

4. Wait 2 to 3 days and repeat the dosage, then after 2 or 3 more days, repeat the dosage 1 more time. (add dosage to your tank a total of 3 times). 3 days after the third dose, the red slime should be gone. You may then replace the carbon in the filtration system and wait one more day.

5. Turn on the other filtration system reactors and turn the protein skimmer back on to low/reduced air input and adjust it back to normal function gradually over a number of days. If set back to normal too quickly, it will foam like mad and overflow the cup.

6. To prevent the return of red slime, put Chemi-Pure in the filtration system.

sometimes you need to do a blackout a second time. kill your lights and stop all feeding until the red slime all dies off. Then resume with less lighting and feeding. and adjust so the red slime stays away.

Some even use a monthly black out for the same exact experience you're having.

Okay so another update with a little more info on my tank its a pretty heavily stocked reef tank 20 gallon long with a 10 gallon sump\fuge I'm running a aquaeurousa 55 skimmer in it flow in the dt is definatly not a problem and I am running carbon and chemi pure as well with chato in the sump also i have about 35 lbs of LR total in the tank and sump with a 2 month old shallow sand bed im thinking it got real bad this time only because i just recently switched my lights last week from 1 HQI metal halide to 2 150 kessils ocean blue tank looks awsome from lights btw but I went out and picked up some nutri sea water and cleaned some of the red slime as I could then did a little 2 gallon water change and starting Monday i will take out all media kill the skimmer and put in chemi clean and kill the lights for 72hrs and after that take out all sponges and change them with new and do a 40% water change and hopefully this will take care of it

Okay so i need help cuz i just did lighs out for 3 days running chemiclean and after did a 25% water change and re add all media and changed out filters and not even 10 minutes after I turned lights back on it is popping back up i really dont get this!!!! Lol
