Hello, I noticed a couple spots last night that have gotten worse on my clowns. Mainly this guy in the picture. The other clown is starting to show signs but not as bad. Please advise as to what this is and what medications I should get for it. Thanks!

I know what that is. Givtome you have to give them to me so they can get better.lol jk it looks like some sort of HLLE

I appreciate all of the information everyone, thank you. The spots haven't gotten any worse, nor any better, within the last 8 hours. I have medication on 2 day order as none of my LFS have anything that can touch brook. Since the velvet and brook treatments seem to also cover ich, I have both medical grade formaldehyde and ruby reef rally on order. I will attempt my first ever rally bath once the medication arrives. I plan to have my 10 gallon QT, which I have seeded with my fluval sponge that stayed wet until yesterday, matched to the SG of the display, and prepare a FW dip. The fish will go from the DT to a 3 minute FW dip, and then into a properly mixed Rally bath for 90 minutes, and then to the QT, which will then get a cupromine treatment shortly after. Should I skip the FW dip? I am concerned about the stress, but think the FW dip could help make the rally bath more effective on a theoretical front. Does this plan sound okay?

I would do the FW dip if it were me. I’d also do one now to help get them through until your meds arrive.

Spots have started receding today. I have not yet done the FW dip as I want to keep the stress levels in the tank as low as possible before having to net the two clowns out. Quarantine is cycling still as I am dialing in salinity. I want this to be an all-in-one deal so the best thing, in my opinion, is to leave stress out of the equation until absolutely necessary. Once I have purchased all of the buckets and pumps and everything to do proper baths and dips and quarantines then I can more easily devise a system. Right now I’m very new at this and nervous to not damage or kill anyone, so until I can streamline the process I’m not going to poke at it. Both clowns still are eating eagerly so if this IS brook, it’s taking it’s sweet time. If it isn’t brook, then it could be a weird case of ich and the clowns may win on their own. They will still end up in quarantine Monday and get their rally bath and have 2.5 months in quarantine To starve the DT. May not be kosher, but I’m trying to piece everything together and it’s taking a couple days to do so.

Update 3/17/19 @ 7:11pm,

Still have not medicated, but I DO have my 10 gallon QT set up and properly salted, temped, etc. I also purchased a Seapora 5 gallon tank and made an acrylic lid for it that works-ish. The 5 gallon will be used for baths as it has its own dedicated pump, air pump, and heater so that any time I need to set it up and bathe/medicate in a hurry everything will already be inside the empty tank, and wont risk leeching medications into another tank should they accidentally be used elsewhere. I figured being able to see the fish from the side as well as having a vessel with corners would allow for easier retrieval of the fish, rather than a plastic bucket.

Almost all spots are gone from both clowns. There are 1 or 2 spots left on the pectoral fins of my larger clown, and the smaller clown is spot-free. Does this normally occur with brook? I am used to a "calm-before-the-storm" period with freshwater ich, but haven't had any experience with marine parasites or brook itself. I still plan to bathe/medicate and QT and have a fallow period to make it safe for future residents.

Last night my Rally arrived from amazon and despite almost all signs of any parasites having disappeared I netted the clowns out and gave them their 90 minute bath at .8 tsp per gallon. Salinity was matched and temperature was about 2 degrees higher in that water, as dialing in a temp with a last-minute cheap heater with 5 gallons of water wasn't the easiest. I normally keep my DT at 78.6 and this bath was at 79.9. This was the closest I could keep it between 81 and 78. Thank you, Aqua Top heater.

Clowns were hungry and trying to eat particles in their bath, almost making a mockery of the process.... silly fish. After 90 minutes of bath and 5 minutes of netting time, they moved from that bath in to the QT at 78.8 degrees and matching SG (1.024 to be exact), which also had a half dose of Cupramine already added, with the other half dose due 48 hours after. Fed the two clowns within 10 minutes of their arrival into the QT and they happily gobbled everything in the Rod's Food. So far, these two are real troopers.

Display will stay fallow for the next 3 months. I know that brook's fallow period is 6 weeks, or 1.5 months, but since this parasite appeared to recede rather quickly from the 2 fish and stay that way over the course of 2 days, I haven't yet ruled out the possibility of Ich, despite the first mucous-esque appearance of my one clown. Ich, having a fallow period of 72 days, urges me to round up to 90 days, to make sure NOTHING is left over! So now I let my tank finish its cycle, let my corals have a chance to mellow out for the next few months, and then I will re-acclimate the clowns.

I will update if anything changes, but since I still do not know what exactly the fish had, and still haven't gotten similar stories of brook disappearing on its own, I remain skeptical and cautious, and hope that my 2 little guys don't get too bored in their 10 gallon.

Thanks again, everyone, for your responses. If you have any experience with fish beating brook on their own accord, please let me know, as I am very curious about this. I realize this thread should have been posted in the disease section rather than tank emergency, and will post there in the future.

Fallow period for ich is 76 days. Sorry not trying to add more time.

Thanks for the correction! Like I said, I am going to leave it fallow for 3 months. Basically another 14 days beyond the fallow period, and that is just a safe rounded number. Makes me feel better! :)
