Need help identifying vintage protein skimmer.

Hello,

When I first got into the hobby I bought this skimmer used. The pump stopped working so I replaced it with a petco pumphead I had lying around. As a HOB it caused way to much salt creep, so I switched to a cheap aquatic life internal mini skimmer.

Now that I have a sump I’m thinking about using this one again.

Does anyone know what model it could be? Or how I can determine what pump it requires?

I remember the original pump was metal and had an air intake hose. I’m pretty sure the whole thing was made in Germany. And rated for 300 gallons.

Any ideas?

Not sure about what skimmer it is, but that looks like a sedra 3500 pump to me.

Here is a link to a company that I know still has them. You can buy impellers from them or an entire pump.

I still use an old Euro Reef skimmer that takes the same pump.

Looks like an Aqua Medic Turboflotor 1000 Multi SL. not sure the specific model of the pump, but hopefully that'll point you in the right direction

How is this skimmer?

Any advice for a replacement pump?(gph, venturi/needle wheel, etc)

Should I bother switching from an aquatic life mini skimmer? It’s for a lightly stocked 40 gallon.

Looks like a Aqua Medic Turboflotor Multi to me. I think they came with an Ocean Runner 2500 pump.

Ok so the original pump was an aqua medic ocean runner 2500, max 650GPH. Looking at the diagram, I do not see a needle wheel.

So I assume I could use any generic pump of a similar size.

If I wanted to switch to a needle wheel would I use one of the same GPH?

The exploded view of the pump likely won't show a needle wheel because that pump is also used for flow. It's kind of like how Reef Octopus sells the Varios pumps both for flow and for skimmers. If you look at the exploded view of the skimmer, you'll see part twelve is the magnet and needle wheel that will be needed for the skimmer to function correctly: https://www.marineandreef.com/v/vspfiles/pdf/TF_Multi_SL.pdf

I actually tried to bring one of those back to life last year. It was used on my first reef around the year 2000. The pump was worn out and needed new parts. The parts were very hard to find and expensive. Mine ended up in the trash after much effort.

My advice would be to run it if you can get it going as is, but I wouldn’t spend a dollar on it. Just my two cents. If you buy an impeller for that thing you’re probably half way to a new skimmer.

That is a Turbo floater 1000 I believe from the pictures you show. These were fairly popular in the mid to late 90's and up to about 2003 ish or so.
I may have some notes on the pump specs residing in my old logs. Heck I think I may have the factory pump for one still in the box in my garage. Shoot me a PM.
Honestly they worked good for the technology and time period though from being very familiar with them I would recommend getting a newer style skimmer since they are hands down so much more efficient.
