I have scoured the net trying to figure out what this snail is but cannot as it doesn't seem to fit any one category aside from conch of some sort and my best guess would be red footed conch even though the shell doesn't look like the ones I've seen it does have a red foot leading me to that conclusion.,

I don't know if they are something to be concerned about but in my 20 gallon I have something to the order of 100+ of these guys that have hatched over time and I'm trying to establish if they are safe or not. It wouldn't be a problem if I bought them but they hitchhiked on something is say live sand but I didn't get them until I started to put snails in the tank and even them I'm lost because I only put Ceriths and nerites in.

I ask my nassarius snails about it and they say it is some kind of whelk. Some whelks are coral predators while most are snail predators and will borrow into the shells of barnacles and other crustaceans.

Welks are meat eaters. While a nassarius snail is a type of whelk, that is clearly not one. The first and most distinc way to identify it as being or not being a nassarius snail is the location that they are normally found in. A nassarius snail will only come out of the sand to eat. If these snails are out of the sand bed at any time other than to engage in food then they are definately not nassarius.
