Our 120 is coming along nicely. We've been running BRS GFO in a reactor for about a month and all signs of nuisance algae are gone. I'm beginning to see nice pinks and purples on the rock and am excited to go from diatoms to coralline finally! My question is about a growth of sorts on the rocks that is dark purple and has a small stick like protrusion coming out of it that is the same color. I have about a half dozen of these on the rocks and a couple on the overflow. Are these part of normal coralline algae, or something else? I hope this is a common occurrence.

Thanks,

If you can snap a pic of it you could probably get an ID on it better. It could be coraline growth or it could be vermited snails. Hard to tell by just a description sometimes.

Thanks, I'll see if I can get a photo tonight......

I think I know what you're talking about...small little coils almost and they're reddish purple...they're a normal occurrence...I have a lot of them in my tank, they're just filter feeds, they won't harm anything.

Here's a picture of the unidentified reddish/purple thingy I'm referring to....center of pic, just to the left of the Acropora. I think I've seen these in other tanks, but you know how it is when you're watching your tank for every little change....

If that's what it is just put a dab of super glue over the end of the tube on all the ones you can see. They can multiply really fast. I don't think they are really harmful to a tank but just really unsightly.
