I recently bought this coral frag at a local shop. It was really unique but the shop owner said he's not sure what it is. He said a customer has been growing it out for about 10 years and occasionally brings in frags. I'm thinking it is a type of acan but the "Torch Coral-like" sweepers don't seem right! Any help would be great. I'll include pics of daylight, moonlight and morning "sweepers".
lot of LPS have that sweeper in the first pic and same with second pic the feeding tentacles. It looks like a candy cane coral to me, but really hard to tell from pictures. I would not consider a candy cane coral unique and any shop owner should know what that is, so likely not it. What does the base look like?
thats weird! It does look like an acan with its feeding tentacles and its fleshy too but those sweepers are more favia like.
Maybe its a new species?! ohhhhhh wouldnt that be cool? haha
Yeah, the sweepers are nothing like I've ever seen on an acan. The closest I've found looking online is Mycetophyllia ferox which is from the Caribbean. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/5/aafeature1_album/17.jpg
But both LFS think it's something else, but they're not sure what!
