Ok so today I got a tank that’s been used, it was emptied this morning before I picked it up. As I was washing it and scraping all the coraline left on the tank I saw this coral. Can someone help me identify it? I carefully scraped it with the coraline so I don’t damage it. It’s now sitting in a glass of water I filled with .026 saltwater and it’s opening up a little now (it was almost fully closed before I put it in water)

should I just give it away as it will take at least another 24h for me to be fully set up and have my first tank up and running (using dry rock and not planning to run any lights until I’m ready for corals in a few months). Should I change my plan and put the coral in the tank as soon as it’s up to temp with the right amount of salt? Should I feed the coral with something in the meantime?

It’s kind of hard to tell with the way it’s open in the pictures. Looks like a mushroom to me? If I were you, I would follow @Wolfman238 advice and find someone with an established tank as soon as possible to try and save it!

Tomorrow morning I'm going to pick up the stand for the tank as it couldnt fit in my car today. The guy has a tank where he grows hundreds of baby corals, I'll bring it to him!! If its a mushroom I think itll make it.

Assuming its a mushroom, it wont get larger in size right? It's about an inch in diameter

Perfect! And depending on what kind of mushroom it is, it could definitely get bigger! I have a St. Thomas that is 3+ inches in diameter.

Mushroom????
Looks like an orange enchinata coral

Looks like an orange mushroom after all! I’m so glad it’s standing up and is fully open just a couple hours after I put it in the glass!

If it can whitstand these conditions can I drop it in my tank during cycling? I have bacteria booster where I can start putting fish after 7 days

Better pics. This looks more like a discosoma mushroom. Most varieties of this coral require little light and in fact may do poorly under bright lights. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and will not need to be fed.

I’ll second discosoma mushroom.

Would it be a good idea to try and keep it alive in my new tank? I mean it survived dryness for 12 hours and then revived itself in a glass of salt water at room temp

These are Very hardy with Low requirements - Why not

Little update on the mushroom : It passed away and started decomposing really fast :( RIP

Now that my tank is finally filled and up to temp, I was thinking of dumping it inside my tank using the decaying coral as a source of ammonia? Would it be safe or would I be bringing bad things along with it? Trying everything I can to cycle this faster so I can safely put my first fishies

There’s a chance of toxins and I would not
