Need help on reef tank please.

I am assuming the big one is close to the surface to give the fishes oxygen? Or u just wanted a somewhat high flow on the top?
This is a 40 breeder tank, I have one PP-8 on one side and two SOW-4 on the other. One of the 4's and the 8 are both toward the top with the other 4 lower. I try to get the entire surface of the water moving.

Standard 55 you wont need more than 2 powerheads and can get by with one. Those tanks are so narrow you can aim one towards the surface, and it will travel across, hit the opposite wall go down and back across the bottom of the tank.
I have a 1250 gph powerhead hitting the surface but, it doesn’t look like it’s hitting across the bottom of the tank.

+1 especially since you don't have any coral yet. But as you add coral and as they grow you will likely want more. I try to get as much flow in the tank as the corals will withstand.

Toss some food in or use a turkey baster to make bubbles and it will help visualize the flow in your tank.

Wow, a breeder tank. That’s awesome!
Thanks for all of the information. I will definitely keep everything in mind and try to accommodate my tank to my current fishes liking over this weekend.

Anytime! Yea it's a great footprint. I've got another build going but it's just another 40 breeder but this time with a sump. When I buy a house I will likely upgrade to something larger but while I'm still renting the 40 breeder is the perfect size imo.

Good luck on your journey with your breeders! It is a great hobby so far but the pockets can take a huge toll! Haha, definitely an expensive hobby.

I am using a canister and I have a current USA ic led lighting. I haven’t bought corals yet but I will in a week.
Canister filters can filter out too much. You need live rock to provide a majority of your filtration. I might be old school here but I have always done one pound of rock per gallon of water as a minimum.

I do have live rocks in my tank. My live rocks were from my previous tank but I cleaned the live rocks accordingly before I reset up my new tank.

welcome to the reef
