Like the title says i am looking to get a skimmer for my 55 gallon tank, with a 20 gallon long sump. i dont have very much room in my first compartment in my sump i have about 6x6 footprint and the water level is about 8 1/2" high. i dont think there is any skimmer that will fit that footprint i could be wrong. so i would either need a hob or and external and the external ones i have found are really expensive so could i go with something like a remorac hob with maxxijet 1200? any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

wow! tight space! The only one that would perform decent with that small a print in sump would be the BM NAC3.5. It would eventually be undersized if you stocked heavily later on so I would go w/ an HOB.

Check out the reef octo BH series HOB's they perform well and are affordable. There are other octo HOB's that use better pumps as well but they are a bit more.

other good HOB options:

eshopps
aquamaxx
deltec $$
