So after 10+ years in the saltwater world I'm attempting a sump build. All my other tanks have always had HOB equipment. Already have the 40 breeder tank, Sicce Syncra 2.0 return pump, Eshopps Eclipse S overflow and Somatic 60S sump but I'm having a hard time figuring out what plumbing I need and more importantly, what size pipes and fittings and the types. Slip fitting, threaded fittings, silicone return tubes, ball valves, gate valves, man my head is spinning. Basically I know I need 2 lines from the overflow to the sump, 1 on a valve and the other opened up for emergency and 1 return back to the tank.

tl:dr What size pvc do I need for the overflow and return. 1" or 1 1/2" overflow and 3/4" return to the tank?

The Eschopps S overflow is native dual 1" bulkheads. I used 1" PVC for the emergency/stand pipe and went down to 3/4" PVC for the siphon. I now use flex PVC exclusively in my drains and returns - mostly means I don't have to futz with elbows and 45s. Ideally you'd want to use a gate valve on the siphon, though a ball valve can be made to work in a pinch.

Is the pvc just jammed up to the bottom, glued in and then place a union a few inches down? Cause I measured it and it seems close to 1 1/2” on the inside, but has threading on the outside. All I’ve seen in pics is the pipe jammed in there but no union attached to the overflow itself.

The bulkheads that came with mine were slip; so, yes, you solvent weld the 1" PVC into the bulkhead.
