Not at all. My pump is very quiet. I was skeptical at first and had heard a lot of mixed info about the Reeflo pumps but that was because of the AO Smith motors. Reeflo is only using Baldor motors now and they are great. I am truly impressed with mine. It is almost dead silent and pumps a ton of water, especially considering how quiet that it is. My vortechs are far louder than the Dart. I'd venture to say that my skimmer (Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 cone) is louder than my Dart.
I do believe that a 40Breeder can be drilled. I have one that has a pair of bulkheads in the bottom of it. I am not 100% sure about the side glass, though. I just checked mine with polarized sunglasses and it does not appear to be tempered.
I paid $270 for mine because I got it when I was on a group buy on BulkReefSupply. That is one of the best prices that I found. If you order from them, you should also get 2" and 1 1/2" true union ball valves from them while you're at it.

The bulkheads have 1" pipes on them?
A 1" gravity fed line will handle approximately 960 gph under good conditions. Two of those means about 1800 gph.

The advantage here is that you can always valve back the output on the Dart and it will produce less flow but also use less electricity.

It looks like everyone has you covered on the pluming advice. The only advice I can lend was given to me by a member here when I started and it has proven to be true. Do It Right....Sleep at Night!!!!
