So I’m getting a nuvo 40 and I want an active reef tank. I currently have 2 clowns

Congrats!!!

Some fish I’d consider for that tank:
Tailspot blenny, forktail or kamohara blenny
Pinkstreak or possum wrasse, maybe even both
Starki damsel or maybe maybe a cherub fish
Royal gramma or orchid dottyback
Pair of banghais
Long nosed hawk or Pygmy geometric perchlet
Shrimp goby pair
Rainford goby

With the clowns I’d probably do a shrimp goby, long nosed hawk or perchlet, tailspot blenny and a gramma or something like that

I personally love baby tangs... but then again, the tang police might jump you for putting one in a 40gallon.
IMO I don't think its bad as long as you trade them in once they get bigger than 3"

The Nuvo 40 is only 2 feet in length and even for a baby tang that is pretty cramped. Basically it would be a temporary holding tank for one.

Anything to replace the goby with ? My grain size is too large.

Depends on what you want, a red head or clown goby will perch on the rock work and coral (Clown gobys do nip sps coral). A fang blenny will swim in the open more, a neon cleaner goby is kind of in between in terms of behavior. I never keep clowns but depending on how aggressive yours are and how much hiding space there is one of the wrasses would be a great choice. A pair of banghais could probably take care of themselves. A yellowhead jawfish could be really cool if you have enough sand (I’ve never kept one so I don’t know exactly how deep the sand has to be - LA says 5” of sand)

So how does this list sounds
2 clowns
Longfin fairy wrasse
Royal gramma
Canary blenny
1 Banggai cardinal
I’m ordering from LiveAquaria and don’t want to get two cardinals and have both of thme fighting

The tank needs a bit more length IMHO for a longfin fairy wrasse. I would look into a possum or pink streaked for that tank.

Trying to decide from the fairy or yellow coris
