Need Help Tang Police

Agreed .... many thousands of gallons ....

It's curious though. I've had a yellow tang now for about 6 years. It started out at about 5", and guess what ...... 6 years later it's still 5". Bought a juvie chevron 2 years ago. Probably 2 1/2" then; pushing 7" now. I have a rescue Naso L. that I got very thin about 3 years ago, maybe 4". It's not thin anymore, but still 4". As I said, curious.

My yellow tang has grown at a glacial rate. My two blue tangs have also grown very slowly over the 5 years I've had them. The blues were about an inch long when I bought them. The larger one is now about 3.5" & the smaller one about 3". All tangs are happy & healthy. The one thing I would change is, one blue tang only. My larger one harasses the other occassionaly. One alway seems to dominate the other, no matter how big the tank.

Don't get self righteous & high moralising with me thanks, & your "dislike" reference just shows intolerance & arogance, & ignorance.

And its a Vlamingi, not a Naso
I got that Vlamingi 5 years ago. The petshop person didn't tell me they grow to 2 feet long >>in the wild<<.
And I'm glad he didn't because if he had I never would have bought it, & in hindsight, that would be sad.
He is a well fed, fat & healthy fish with a wonderful character and the joy of my tank.

He is nine inches long but hasn't grown at all in three years, and that fact has had no negative affect on him at all.
Two feet in the wild, not in a tank.

I seriously thought this post was a joke, and even laughed. I’m far from a tang police guy, but dang... Rehome that fish before he’s permanently stunted and dies prematurely. Please.

Keep this thread civil. No personal attacks. This is not how we enjoy the R2R community.

Also, in my opinion @Scrubber_steve — it is HIGHLY unethical to keep any naso genus tang in anything less than an 8 foot tank — Vlamingi and Unicorn may even need larger.

Please, please consider rehoming those tangs. Tangs swim several miles per day and really don’t appreciate being cooped up.

Q1. What is "permanently stunted" in regards to aquarium fish? Is there any scientific data to explain "permanently stunted"? And if so, what are the suggested negative effects of this "permanently stunted" paradox?

Q2. Define "dies prematurely"

In the case of a naso genus tang — doesn’t love to 10-20 years old in your care.
Well V is five and going strong. Longer than many people stay in the hobbie. I'll let you know when he gets to 10yo.

well respectfully, that's your opinion, & I didn't ask for it!
You’re on a public forum where people are passionate about the ocean creatures we keep, discussing how you keep a fish 2x wider than his tank. Forgive me but I think we are all here to discuss our opinions on the subject.

, discussing how you keep a fish 2x wider than his tank.
I don't have a fish 2x wider than my tank.
I also don't believe its fair for a moderator to come on so strong to a defenceless poster. You can delete & ban. I can just be deleted & banned.
So I gave my details of actual experience.

Thanks

I’m sorry if you feel offended by my position, but I am a fish nerd and tangs are my strongest suit. I am very passionate about the animals that we keep.

I am sharing with you my thoughts, given the above information. How you receive them is your choice, but know that no malice was intended with my posts.

Ok- dead horse is beaten to death.

Majority agree it’s unethical to keep the fish in his size tank.

He has had it for 5 years and disagrees.

There is no compromise middle ground here. He isn’t going to get rid of a 5 year old fish that is a pet, and no one is going to change their minds over Tank suitability.

Let’s just drop it.

He’s not coming on too strong. Heck, he deleted my comment because I was coming on too strong to you. Two blue tangs, a naso, a yellow, a flame angel, and god knows what’s else in a 46 is just grossly, indisputably, irresponsible and unethical. That’s not a personal attack. It’s a fact. It’s also a fact that grossly irresponsible acts further tarnish a hobby already under attack.

And how do you respond to this? By rationalizing and justifying and by refusing to accommodate and consider the very real concerns your fellow hobbyist are sharing with you. The goal of R2R, in my view, is to connect hobbits and share best practices and experience. Don’t share what you don’t want discussed, and it won’t be discussed. Simple as that.

To put some perspective into this thread, I have a 46 gal, 3' x 1.5' x 1.5' tank.
I have a vlamingi, a yellow, & two blue tangs.

Here are my Tangs

Here is perspective. I have an 8' long tank, and this valmingii is all if 18", he can move swiftly through the tank, and creates a wake. they do in fact need a very long tank.

Didn't plan for a tank in your new house, shame on you. When we bought our house that was my first item on my list was were would the 6' tank go.

I don't feel so strange for moving just so I can have a shot at a completely clean basement to renovate JUST for a new large tank. It is literally the reason I decided to move from a house I was in love with to my current dream home. :) Nothing was more fun than having a clean slate to work with. One of my requirements when I viewed the home was that I could bring all my tape measures and scope out the basement alone.

I have moved my now 10 years old Hipo from a 150G to my current 400 and with tangs and got to see it swim across a longer tang and its way nicer to see tangs in a longer tank as you get to see how fast they can swim or track them as they glides from left to right with an apparent no effort. also the growth rate (Although now he's older and theoretically it should grow a bit slower visually at least)
to go back to the original posters question I would try to reconsider a slightly larger tank. maintenance and running cost doesn't have to be much more with a small size jump, setup cost might get a bit higher with maybe one more light to purchase, a bit more corals maybe unless if you make it simplistic and allow corals a bit more space...

Not to keep harping on the Vlamingi, but all fish grow fast in a couple of years this helps them to survive. In 10 years they almost grow to full size and then grow slowly after that. So your Vlamingi being about 5 years old has grown to 9" in 5 more years it can easily be 14" at year 10. You will definitely see a change in its behavior. Good luck, still a beautiful fish.

Me too. Wife wanted the new house for the community pool at the end of our yard, the lake, the huge yard and the Reno potential. I bought it fir the completely unfinished full basement with side walk out.

Priorities.
