I did a water change and siphoned the sand bed clean but this stuff came right back. It's on some rocks too just not as bad.

Looks like dinos unfortunately. There’s a huge thread on here about it. Would need a microscope to know for sure but I’d bet it is.

Does it fade at all between water changes?

I’m leaning toward dino as well, could still be a cyano.

I've prepared a slide to look at it but I'm not sure what to look for.

When I vacuum the sand bed it tends to clump up and stick to the sand. I get some of it out but not a bunch.

I can’t rember the picture thread here. But it’s an easy google too.

If you go to the big dino thread there, they should pint you the right direction.

IMO , the solution is alwasy the same.
Avoid nutrient limitation, zero on no3 or Po4. Avoid vibrant Aminos, and carbon dosing , Clean up mats and manual removal (peroxide kills them, ozone too). Check ph , high co2.
Same as cyano basically.

Some foods , and some salt mixes can increase the problem.

Should No3 and Po4 be zero?

That’s a trick question. On some tests and in some tanks , we see zoeres like ulns systems , but the tank seems to fed correctly , with enough of a fish load most likely, to supply the corals and organisms enough to eat.
But true zeroes can be bad. As nitrifying bacteria need that too.
Without the competion of that Bactria, other organisisms take hold.

Some of the first steps in the dino threads it to increase nutints. That’s to feed the good stuff , while you kill the bad stuff.

Ok, that's what I thought you meant. Po3 is 10 and Po4 is .03. Wondering if I should raise my phosphate up a bit.

No. It’s not zero. It’s not balance , it’s limitation.
If you have it available in the system , it’s not limited.
