Hello all,

First post here. New to the hobby and recently established my tank. I have some new algae in my tank, and my CUC doesn’t seem to be touching it...literally not eating the stuff.

Background on my setup: 32g Biocube. Salinity 1.025-026, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and between 5-10 nitrates. Haven’t tested for phosphates, but a kit is coming. I have a decent assortment of astreas, ceriths, nerites, hermits, and nassarius for the CUC. If any other info is needed, just ask.

Attached is a photo of the algae in reference. Any info/suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Vzo,

Dont worry too much, all part of the cycling process. I expect your phosphates are a bit high. If you're cycling your tank with the lights on, maybe reduce the hours they're on or turn them off altogether. Nothing in your tank that needs it and it's just a source of energy for the algae.

Water changes are your friend... this will reduce your phosphates and nitrates too. Just make sure you're not using tap water as this will contain high phosphate levels normally.

I'm not sure if you have a sump or anywhere you could put some rowaphos but that will also help.

Looking at your pic though, that's not that bad. I've seen and had a lot worse during cycling.

Thank you ShadowReef for your input. I actually finished the cycle 6 weeks ago, and have been doing weekly water changes (~30%) because my nitrates were much higher.

As you mentioned, the phosphates may be the problem, so I will be testing for that soon.

I don’t have a sump, but will look into rowaphos.
