I just assembled the skimmer and positioned it on the back of my Nuvo 40. The skimmer is mounted to Ed the return and the pipes are in the second chamber. The elbow of the return is partially above water. Can I remove the elbow and get a longer pipe to get below the water’s surface?

I also noticed the top of the T on the return is open. Why is that?

I have that skimmer on a regular tank not a AIO, but I would say yes you can extend the elbow portion, I can't think of why not.

I dont know why they left the top of the T open, but its a design flaw in my opinion, it gurgles, it drives me nuts, so I put a ping pong ball on the top of mine and it stops the gurgle sound

Do you think I can put the elbow where the “T” is and just put a pipe straight down?
