Need Help with derso overflow Toilet noise

It is too much return flow. You need to crank it back until it stops. And yes, it is feast or famine with this type of drain. To stop the flushing, it needs to be slower. Installing a larger air vent might help but changing over to a full siphon style drain is a better choice.

This is exactly right.. If opening and allowing more air or less does not work you have to much flow through your pipes.. A ball valve will quite it but is super dangerous because you already have too much flow.

A maggie muffler and durso should both be silent if set up right... I have used both and they pretty much work the same.

Thanks for the pictures. I will see what I can do about it, for now I'm running the drain on a full siphen . my water level stays at the same level most of the time and I have no problems. I have no emergincy drain though so that could one day be a problem. .

This happened to me on my current tank, my pump was too much. I had to redo my plumbing from my return pump to the tank by putting a t with a gate valve to allow some water to go back to my refuge.

Earlier you had said you bought it from a friend and it was tuned in and wouldn't need to adjust the durso. Is your return pump different?

One possible solution you could try for your tank would be to keep the durso on your larger hole, the second hole that's your return could be made into your emergency drain, and you could do an over the back return pipe then off your pump - this would essentially turn your durso into a bean/herbie. I did this in my previous tank and it worked well.

Have any images? Don't quit get what your saying.

Google "stockman standpipe" it is the DIY version of the Maggie. They were very popular 10 years ago before people started using the Herbie/Bean systems. They are right that if you can't get a durso to be silent, the Maggie probably wont be either. They both use the same principle. Open drain with an air vent on the top. The main advantage is the Maggie is a smaller profile, which was important when people first started upgrading their small overflow boxes to run stand pipes. Can you imagine 20 years ago, they just let the water fall 2 feet to the bottom of the overflow. It would sounds like a waterfall in your living room... Progress!!!! HTH

One solution that I came up with is to put a small piece of tubing in the center of the drain and that actually stopped the gurgling, it just have a waterfall sound instead.

Great post @ReeferBob. (Emphasis mine.) ;)

This is your correct answer @Tyler Roth ...simply throttle back the flow a little at a time until it's silent. You'll still have plenty of flow for the filtration in the sump - trust me. The rest of the answer is good too!

I'd forget the rest of the other solutions the thread has offered for now - not that they are bad, just not needed in this case. Might come in handy down the road though!

FYI it's extremely common, usually in the spirit of "more is better", to run too much flow through one's drains...the reason durso's were created, in fact.

That happened before the era of propeller-based powerheads (thank you Tunze!) so people were still flowing their tanks from their return pump and pushing the envelope as far as possible on the tank drain to get every GPH they could.

That era has passed. :) :) :) :) There is no reason these days to run more than two to four times the size of your display tank in GPH through your sump. Which is easily accomplished in silence. :) :) :) :)
