I have a 50 gallon QT tank that I have to put my fish in from my display tank. I got a really bad ich outbreak. So I would like to treat with coppersafe and leave my DT fallow for around 90 days. I have come across some forums with confusing information in regaurds to doesing Coppersafe. Can someone help me? I have a seachem copper test that tests up to 1.0. Some people are saying that copper readings need to be at 1.5 to 2.0 for some wiggle room. I’m lost right now and have to get this going. I’ve lost my clown and bi colour blenny. The fish are family.

Fish: powder brown, yellow tang, hippo tang, 1 chromi, pajama cardinal, badguy cardinal (that’s what I call him), 2 nemo looking clowns (can never spell their names right).

I also have a green Mondrian. What should I do with him? I can’t treat him in copper. If I leave him in the DT he will just be a carrier?

You will need a different test kit. I would also warn you that coppersafe consistency is shaky at best. Treating fish with copper and doing so successfully requires accurate dosing and testing to monitor. The test kit you have is for ionic coppers and does not read high enough to properly monitor chelated copper (coppersafe/copper power).

The mandrin will need to be treated with the tank transfer method. Leaving it in your DT won't allow you to erradicate the parasites with a fallow period.

If you have to use coppersafe, you will need a Hanna high range copper checker to use it with any kind of confidence. At a minimum you need the API test kit. It's very hard to read, especially given the fact that recently we have discovered coppersafe right out of the bottle to be anywhere from. 2.0ppm-3.0ppm

Wow! Thank you! What copper product and test kit do you recommend?

I recently have switched upon Hanna verification that the high range copper checker is accurate for use in saltwater, to copper power blue by Endich, used with the checker. It seems to be very consistent bottle to bottle.

I treat at 1.75ppm.

Therapeutic minimum for chelated copper products is 1.5ppm

I can’t fing a store that carries that that is even romotly close to me. Would cupermine with the API test kit work together? And are they as affective?

Cupramine is ionic copper. It will work with your current test kit. Sometimes ionic copper tends to be a bit more harsh on certain species.

I would most definitely choose cupramine over coppersafe (without a Hanna checker on hand).

Therapeutic level is .5ppm.

Read bottle instructions closely. They instruct two doses. Total of 40 drops or 2ml per 10.5 gallons. I would spread this out in even doses, 2 doses per day over 3-5 days instead of two large doses as they instruct.

That is awesome advice, thank you :) I’ll keep this test kit and get cupramine in the morning. I know the bottle says does in the 48 hrs and I was already ify about that so now that I have you’re advice, I’ll take it! Thank you so much. I just want my happy healthy reef back.

I encountered another problem. The 2 clowns look to have brooks. Copper won’t help that will it? Will I have to treat all the fish for brooks and then ich or how should I go about this? I’m lost and can’t seem to find good info on the web. I wanted to ask you before I head to my Ltf

Ok, so I should not do a dip and then put them into the copper qt? That will be too much for them. Do you recommend I attach the brooks first, wait till they heal and then start treating the qt with copper? I’m letting my DT fallow for 90 days so I have time I just don’t know how much time my fish have :(

Can you post pics of these fish?

It's not that it's too much to handle for the fish. It's the fact that the brook would still be present in the QT if you dip and put them right back. So if you only have the one QT Dose it with metroplex to cover brook. It can be used with copper but you need to make sure you have alot of oxygenation.

Sorry for the dirt sand and pictures are a bit blurry. It’s all I have right now. I’m headed to the lfs. It kind of looks like the ich try’s to fall off and is attached to the fish by slime? If that makes sense. Like on the clown, she has almost like dead skin slipping off her fin. Not sure in that is noticeable in the photos

While clowns can be difficult to diagnose. With seeing your powder brown, I am fairly certain you are dealing with velvet. In which case you will want to get your copper therapuetic within 48 hours and do so with as many small doses broken down throughout the couple days.

I bought some wood air stones and I also have a sponge filter. I did go ahead and buy cupramine in relpacment of coppersafe. I will be catching the fish and putting them in the 50 gal qt today. And then I start the copper treatment right away with the seachem test kit? Also, should I hold off on the metroplex or does it today as well?

Any tips on catching these fish without tearing the reef apart would also be very helpful :) every rock has coral or anemones on it and I would love to avoid making a mess

Combine copper + metroplex, on the off-chance this is brook: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/brooklynella.247938/

DIY fish trap using eggcrate, fishing line, and zip ties:

That’s a great trap! I’m going to make one tonight for the next time I need it. This time, I was in a hurry to save these fish so I had to tear down my reef.

I’m going to start the copper and metroplex tonight.

Very wise IMO
