I'm confused by flow and what pump to use, do I want a gyre for a 72x28x23 tank? Or power heads, I'm looking at vortech, which ones the 40 or 60 how many etc? Right now for at least 4 to 5 months no coral.

It’s depends what you will be keeping. The key is almost always randomness though, so you’ll need multiple directional pumps. Over time you may even need more as things start to grow and block the flow. I like Nero’s on either side and a random flow generator on the return. Things you can tell us is if you’ll be keeping mostly hard branching corals like SPS, fleshy LPS or softies. Some things require very heavy flow while others just need enough to gently move them back and forth. Also, aesthetically some pumps are easier to hide while others can be placed on the back. Also, might want to consider the grain size of your sand too. The more fine the more it can be blown around. Bare bottom tanks are harder to deal with at the beginning but less trouble in the long run.

What he said. Givenus some detail of what you plan on keeping and you will get some reccomendations.

Everyone else already asked some pretty important questions, so I won’t duplicate those.

If you want to save some money over the Ecotech stuff and don’t mind a couple cords in the tank, the Reef Octopus Octopulse 4’s on opposing ends of your tank would be a killer start for a mixed tank. If you had all sps, maybe mix them with 2 wide angle Tunze on the back wall to avoid any potential dead spots, but that may not even be necessary if you crank up the Octopulse 4’s. They are absolutely ripping for larger tanks.

My tank is 72 x 32 x 24 and I am running 3 MP40 and 1 MP60. I may either eliminate the MP60 and run another MP40 or dump 2 of the MP40 and run another 60. Lots of flow for sure, all are dialed back.

SO, just got to set down and read, I am not sure of names give me a few to look them up. I am doing a 4 month no light cycling (I think thats what its called, its where you use Dr Timms one and only and put fish in it and slowly add every few weeks as the tank comes into balance, then let things stew for 4 months before turning on light. To give the good stuff time to help fight off the bad and the algae. I hope I am doing it right). I havent got much past that, I am not sure what coral are good together and what fish or clean up crew. I am sure I figure it all out. I am waiting on my Tank to be shipped.

I know I want:

ORA LONG POLYP LEATHER CORAL

ORA MARSHALL ISLAND HAMMER CORAL

ORA MARSHALL ISLAND LONG POLYP GONIOPORA

ORA MICRONESIAN TORCH CORAL

are a few, very few. I got this from Algaebarn.com I have 2 local place I will also check on. I love the torch coral with clownfish.

Anyways if you have any suggestions I would grateful for that.

Thank you for your time and info.

PS should I ad 2 60's and a Grye also?

For those corals… I would say that would be overkill. Maybe just the opposing pumps (MP60s or Octopulse 4’s) and you will probably need to still turn those down. Do you plan to stock a lot of acropora later?

I am not sure, I like alot of the stuff that soft and wavy or moves in the current. but I know I probable need to diversify more.
any suggest I could look at or would you put in the tank?

I know I have some clownfish, tangs(yellow and brisestooth and a blue) and a lot of others. but this are the few I am starting with for starting the tank. there are about 2 or 3 more I have to look them up.

Ok. So you are very new to reefing and need some advice I see. The first thing I would like to see is a FTS (Full Tank Shot). This will allow us to see how your rock work is situated. Pump recommendations and placement will come into play here.

Since you are just starting and from what corals you like. You dont need crazy flow in your tank. So post a FTS and lets see what you have so we can further dial you in.
