Hi R2R community , I’m almost on my 3rd month in , when I first got my Red Sea 20 gallon I bought a small 365 hydor power head , was wondering if I need more flow ? Any recommendations? I do plan on going sps route as well

So 365 gph / 20G is roughly 18x turnover. There are videos (check out BRS tv) where turnovers as high as 100x are explored, and others where the value of good turnover is more adequately explained than I could do here.

My flow schedule is complicated as I have DC pumps with a variable flow schedule, but I’m roughly at 50x turnover during the day (powerheads only, more with other filtration), on average. It’s all about what you want to achieve, what kind of corals you want to keep, what fish you want to keep.

I’m no expert here but you’ll likely hear differing opinions from veterans that keep different types of fish and coral, but if you want to go SPS, my guess is that yeah, you’re gonna need more flow.

What kind of coral will you be keeping? Softies? You should be safe with low flow but sps and stonies the more flow the better... IMO

Thanks man appreciate it ! I’ll look into brs tv on flow

Thank you appreciate it , I’m look into into sps at the moment
Possibly get an additional hydor powerhead and the hydor controller thats easy plug and play and allows u to vary the powerheads at like 5-10 sec intervals. Put em on opposite sides of tank to vary the currents with only 1 on at a time. Works great and really inexpensive for a plug and play. I have 3 hydors and 1 controller hooked up to my redsea 260 plus a reefwave 25 gyre. Can never have enough flow. No dead spots that way. In a smaller tank its always good to keep detritus suspended.
