Need help with ghost overflow water level

Hi everyone,
I recently got an aqueon 75 to replace my current tank which has a leak. I got the EShopps medium ghost overflow. I finally gathered my supplies and went to drill it today when I discovered that because of the rim, the water level on the overflow box is going to be at least an inch below the rim. I put the inner overflow box right up to the top of the rim, not the template or the outer box. I really don’t want to go spending all this time and energy drilling this tank for the water level to be visible.

Should I have gone with the small overflow? If I exchange it at Lfs would it make a difference? Did I miss something about these overflow boxes only being for rimless tanks or something? And most importantly, what are my other options here? I’d prefer a ghost overflow, but if I’m going to be seeing the water line like this I’d rather save the hassle and go with the reef ready.

Unfortunately, it's a problem with the E overflows - very poor design. Your options are to perform surgery on the tank rim to remove the lip, use some kind of backing in the skim box to raise the water level or return it and get a different brand.

The trick is to drill the tank with Eshopps overflow template inside the glass not outside. The inside part of the trim is short it than the outside. I drill my Aqueon 40g Breeder and water line is over the trim. The Eshopps overflow was made for a rimless tank, reason why if you drill a rim tank from out side will get a low water level.

I put the template on the outside with the top of resting on the rim at the desired level. Then can use a scrap piece of 1/4" acrylic at the bottom to support the template so that its level. Then tape it into place to hold it while you drill

That happens to me too. But they have some of the 75g that only the bottom is tempered. Petco told me that the ones on the $1 sales are all tempered. I have to get the Marineland that only the bottom is tempered.

I ended up going with a deep blue tank and im glad I did but I bought the medium eshoppes overflow and have the same issue. the water level is below the trim. I think im going to glue plexiglass over the teeth where the water goes in to make the water raise up so I don't have to cut the trim at all

You can do that if you already drilled the tank.

I did consider this idea to save the trouble of trying to find another tank and overflow.

I wasn't even using the template to measure this because I knew the rim would interfere. I was just putting the actual overflow box as high up as possible and it'll still be below the line. I might just put something over it to raise the level some.

Are you using the bottom of the internal weir teeth as your measurement?

The water will be higher than the bottom of the teeth.

I was aware of the alignment issue but still drilled mine a tad low. Even with doing so my water level is only about a 1/4" below trim. Could have easily gone higher so.

I also have an AGA 75

I'm using the bottom of the teeth as my indication, but now that you point it out my Reef Ready overflow the water goes a bit higher than the bottom of the teeth actually so I guess I'll just go with it.

I'm very happy with my eclipse L other than eshopps lame template.

Put the template on the inside of the tank not the outside. That way your water level is not off.
