Used it for the first time today it either reads 0 or Add C2. My lot # 4507 so i think the reagent's still good. Please help.

When it says add c2 did you hold te butting until it runs a timer for 2 mins? After the 2 mins it will say press the button again and then will give you your reading.

If this was your outcome then you may have missed a step in the instructions. The first step is to zero out the unit with regular tank water. When is says Add C2 remove the tube and add the reagent. Put the tube back into the unit and press the button again. It will read for about 2-3 seconds and give you the ppm. Use a small crumpled piece of newspaper to clean the outside of the tube.

The alkalinity reader does not have a 2 minute wait time and you don't need the hold the buttom. You're thinking of the PO4 reader unless they have a new alkalinity meter out that operates differently.

These are my alk reader instructions. Had the meter over two years. Maybe we have different ones but mine has a 2 minute timer.

I followed the instructions + watched the video. First 3 tries gave me the same error. Subsequent tests yields the followings # 98,101,103. Not a huge difference Imho.

I got mine this last year and it is like Logzor's. There is no 2 min timer. Just push the button to turn the unit on, it will read C1, add bottle with clear tank water, close top and push button, It will "think" for a few seconds, Then display's C2, then you remove the tube and add 1ml of reagent, replace the top, invert the tube at least 5 times, replace tube in unit, close the lid, push button, Unit will "think" for a few seconds and then display ppm. You must multiply the result by .056 to get to dkh.

your Alk seems really low.Mine usually runs in the 145-155 range. That's ppm. around 8.5 dkh. Yours looks to be in the 5.6 dkh range.

and that's how the cookie crumbles!
Above is the only correct way for the Hanna.

Here is a Alkalinity reading conversion,
SaltyZoo's Alkalinity Reading Conversion (meq/l / dKH / ppm CaCO3) Utility

Unless you are on the fringe of the upper of lower limits 1dkh isn't going to hurt you. Being stable is far more important.

I have the alk checker and the directions don't mention using a timer.

The timer is for using the powdered reagents. Mine say the same thing. They discontinued the powdered reagent awhile back, but I had some that worked great until I ran out. The liquid reagent actually gives me consistent 26-27ppm higher readings than the powder. For the liquid reagent you don't use the timer. I don't know which method was more accurate, although my API kit agreed with the powdered version. I contacted Hanna about this numerous times and needless to say they have some of the worst customer service I've ever dealt with from basically being called a liar to being ignored.

My hanna alk checker doesn't have the timer version, at least in the instructions. I compared it to my API, and it was similar, I know, big whoop, API for contrast. FWIW I checked my API vs, my salifert for Calcium, and they also were very close.

My dkH is usually around 6-7 (the checker usually shows me a 125-135 number) I am growing SPS, and I'm growing it well, like mentioned above, consitancy is more important. I've not brought my dkH up because I've not had a reason to, and I refuse to chase a magic number.
