So I took one of my hermit crabs out of the tank after he ticked me off rock climbing my corals. I put him in a time out cup over night with water from the tank until I decided to put him back or give him the boot. When I woke up the next day I have little swimmers in the water. I know the water I use has live bacteria in it. But I was curious if someone could pinpoint what exactly it is. This is why I love this hobby really cool to think there’s that many critters in the water that we can even see with the naked eye. I’m amazed it grew to this size overnight in a cup. Go figure. Thanks in advance.

I think those are mysis shrimp. Must have been camping on a rock or hermit shell. No idea how that many came though.
I have no clue how they would have got in the tank to began with though I feed frozen brine shrimp and frozen zooplankton to fish, invertebrates and corals unless it’s in the water I’m using. That’s an insane amount to be attached to the small hermit shell though. It’s only a half cup of water to. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe mysis shrimp is freshwater right I think correct trem is mysid shrimp. I think I’m gonna pull just a cup of water out of the tank and let it sit over night to see if it in the water or your right about the shell. But I agree with you definitely looks like some kinda of shrimp. Still can’t get over how many is in there.

Might be that…to many names and creatures.
All I know is overnight a whole bunch appeared in my tank after getting some corals. They hitchhike the same way pods do, on rocks and corals.

Free fish food. Feed them and see if you can get them to grow and multiply for live food.

Congratulations, your crab spawned! Those are hermit larvae, meaning your crab was a female with eggs. Sadly they are very, very difficult to rear as they require live food and pelagic conditions to thrive, but you can feed them to your fish for a nutritious treat!

I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! That makes a lot of sense!
Never knew the crab larvae looked like that.
Best of luck with them, hopefully at least a few make it!
