Need help with noisy Eshopps overflow

I previously was using a CPR overflow but due to a number of failures with the aqualifter, I decided to switch to the Eshopps PF-300 for my 40g breeder.

While I do like the Eshopps given it doesn't rely on a mechanical part to maintain the siphon, the overflow is quite noisy, sounding like a waterfall.

I have a ball valve on both my return and drain; if I reduce the flow on my Sicce 3.0, the overflow will quiet down a bit but air bubbles start building in the U-tube. Only with higher flow do those bubbles get pushed past the bend of the U-tube. I read that with these U-tube type overflows, you don't want to get air bubbles trapped in the tube or it will break the siphon.

I also don't want to reduce the flow on the drain due to potential flooding issues. I have looked into the gurgle buster and the maggie muffler, but don't those essentially restrict the drain flow as well? Am I no worse off than just closing my drain ball valve?

I have the exact same setup could you show me a picture of the insert you have in the bulk head? As in take it out and take a photo of how you have the sponge setup.

Ok try this ...make sure the clear plastic part is inserted into the sponge and not the bulk head. Leave a small bit exposed about 1/4 - 1/2 inch like the picture and insert it into your bulk head. That should reduce almost all the sound.

Well I mean it's still sucking air down the bulk head. But I can barely hear mine at all. Is your box sitting flush with the tank (do you have the little white screw tightened to be level with the rear of the aquarium)?

The first thing I did when I got the pf800 was to get rid of that tube and make a Stockman Standpipe. Really easy to make and quiets the overflow down drastically. I have my tank next to where I watch TV and I don't hear it at all. Instead of drilling holes in the PVC like in the video I cut out two big squares so there's less chance of clogging.

You don't have to use those exact parts, but it should look the same. I didn't use the gasket from that coupling on my second Stockman build because I noticed that when I handled the gasket it would leave a black residue on my hands. It's only used so that the 1.25" coupling will sit in place and not slide down the PVC. Instead I rummaged through Home Depot and found a fitting that looked the same but was snug enough on the PVC that I didn't need the gasket from that coupling fixture, if I remember correctly I believe it was some type of bushing. I didn't use a valve on the airline, I just move the airline up or down to adjust the height of water in the overflow. You'll be amazed at how quiet the overflow gets when you install this. The only noise I hear is the very faint trickle sound of the water going down the tube into the sump.

On my 20 gal Long Nano.. I have the Eshopps PF Nano Overflow and when I switched
to my 660gph pump, it got super loud. I put a ball valve on the return and cut down the
flow and the overflow box was still Gurgling.. I didn't want to cut anymore flow, I had it exactly
how I wanted.. So I took a strainer off of a powerhead I wasn't using, and it fit perfectly on
the pvc pipe inside the overflow box and it cut the noise down by about 80%.. At least now
it sounds like quiet flowing water as opposed to an annoyingly loud sucking gurgling
sound...

I’m also trying to silence my overflow. I have a life reef overflow that I use a gate valve to restrict the water going down to then allow the water to build up over the pipe allowing the flow to be silent. However it is always fluctuating and I feel this might be a better way. Any ideas where to buy a little sponge like that?

Try removing the sponge, use only the white tube.
