i have a serpent star fish that I got from Dallas north aquarium, it started of ok I guess and then about 4-5 days in now he started to lose a pice of his arm/leg/tentacle and so I monitored him and the next day a little bit more had come off. I called Dallas north and the guy told me he thought that the Halloween hermit crab was messing with him. I took the hermit out and nothing happened for a couple days.
The other night my rock collapsed inside my tank while I was away and when I was taking the rock out I noticed that he may have been hit by the rock. There are no marks on him to show that the rock cut him or anything. When I got home from work I noticed that he has lot a lot of pieces from his arms. The hermit crab is still out of the tank.
The question is, what is happening to my serpant starfish?

A couple of pics under white lights may be helpful
There are a few reasons this can happen:
Hi salinity, low ph, hi nitrates
Additionally, choc chip stars and even large bristle worms will dismantle them

I checked salt level is at 1.023 just about, I need to do a water check for the rest.
I have 2 dwarf clowns, 2 diamond gobys, a fire shrimp and the red serpant starfish.

I red on line that he might be starving. I put a clam on a half shell under him and then a lot of brine shrimp food around him as well last night. Hopefully he eats...

Bring salinity up to 1.024-1.025
