I have a yellow dog face puffer that has a white spot about 1/8" in diameter with what looks like an indentation in the middle of it. It is on his body about a 1/2" in front of his tail. For about the last month he has kept his tail tight(not fanned out like normal) and curled up. I pulled him out of my 300g FOWLR last night and put him in quarintine. I have never had any disease in my tank as I always quarintine. I need help diagnosing this spot so I can figure out how to treat him. Thanks, John

That looks like an injury that got infected. What else is in the tank with him? Is he still eating? Do you have kanaplex or furan 2 on hand?

Nobody in the tank ever messes with him. I have an emperor angel queen angel, purple tang, naso tang, pork. Puffer, Guinea fowl puffer, lookdown fish and a small harlequin tusk. I don't have either of them meds on hand.

Well it looks like an injury or even a puncture wound. The meds I listed are antibiotics. You'll need to get one or both of those to treat. Also boost his immune system with vitamins in his food and healthy offerings

Are kanaplex and furan 2 the best meds for this? I'm not sure what the LFS carries. Are there others that would work good? Does it just need to be an antibiotic? Thanks

Kanaplex is probably the best one to use, as kanamycin is readily absorbed by a fish's skin. Furan-2 contains nitrofurazone, and that is another good option. I'm a big fan of mixing nitrofurazone with methylene blue, like what is commercially sold here: http://store.nationalfishpharm.com/Nitrofuracin-Green-59584.Item.html

You can also mix Furan-2, Kanaplex and Seachem Metroplex to create a very wide spectrum antibiotic.

Erythromycin & Minocycline (Maracyn 1 & 2) are old standbys, but probably more useful for treating FW fish - except in certain situations like eye infections in SW fish.
