Need help with your aquascape?

If you need an outside perspective to help with improving your aquascape, just post here a few shots of your tank, and will try my best shot at providing specific advise according to your goals for the tank.

Sometimes I can just answer here, show the alterations using photoshop or make a video.

Just post here front shots with your cellphone/camera positioned at 3 different heights (sand level, centre and water level) and also a couple of angled photos, so that I can have a better understanding of your tank's layout.

This is a subject that is surprisingly not researched by most reefers and I have given some thought and some time ago I did a similar exercise in another forum.

It's also a great way for everyone to learn from each other and see a few freshwater techniques that we can apply and also many others that are specific for reef tanks.

In the meantime, if you want some inspiration here are a few videos I made with suggestions for different tank shapes.

I would use one or two of those flat works as a base and use the rounder ones to add height. The other flat rocks can be used to make arches or shelf.

The structure on the right looks weird because of all the rocks pilled horizontally.

That being said, I wouldn't change it. Once it gets covered in corals, the whole layout will look well balanced and interesting.

There's that sense of the water flowing in one direction (from right to left in your case) that the freshwater master aquascapers try to achieve.

It looks good, each of the 3 structures is interesting in its own way. I just wish they had different heights, but you can do that with the coral choice for each one of them.

yes, the same height was kinda bugging me, but i figured as you did, that if i go higher, no room for coral on top of the high rock :O)

Thank you very much for your input it really has helped me understand how to make a more realistic reef scape I'm sure in the future I'll be asking for more input.

I'd put the taller piece toward the back letting the plateau come out forward, then leave a space and add the smaller piece at an angle in the fore front. Turn each of them in different directions to see what looks best, but that would be my positioning I think. Hard to know for sure without seeing it in the tank.

Anyone have any thoughts on having two different color rocks for my aquascape? It's a 150gal SCA tank. I have 120lb of WW Atlantic Coral Rock, and I was considering 30-40lb of "Real Reef Rock" (the red man made rock) to add a bit of diversity. Or would you just go with another 30-40lb of a white color rock (maybe reef saver?)

Even if you got two colored rocks eventually they will get covered in coralline algae so you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Doesn’t look bad at all. Good areas to let flow through the rock. I would only suggest moving everything a bit to the left so it’s even.
