Hey guys, my fish have all of a sudden broken out with a massive case of icy or velvet. My clowns and chromis appear to be ok but my yellow eye Kole looks beyond terrible and my yellow doesn’t look great either.

I’m not sure I can save the yellow eye but would like to try and confirm if this is inch or velvet before I start treatment.

Not that it's needed here, but as a second opinion: I agree 100% with velvet. Act as quickly as you can.

All fish are in a QT tank but it’s a QT had no time to seed anything.

Fresh water dip and formalin bath done and now sitting in copper with my fingers crossed

Does not look like I caught this in time. First tang was lost this morning with the second a few hours later and the last one shortly after.

So far the clowns and chromis appear to be ok in QT.

All fish are now out of main display.

Sorry for your loses. Clowns are pretty tough. Their heavy mucus coating often helps them to survive and be the last man standing in tanks ravaged by velvet. However, they frequently then are carriers of the disease unless treated, even if you don't see the tell tale signs and symptomatic behavior.

Hey humble when speak of minimum therapeutic levels for copper if I’m using cupramine what is the conversion in say ppm.

I’m using a Salifert test kit and want to make sure I’m staying at the right level.

Thanks big G

Clowns and chromis are going through treatment and I hope once they make it through I can start again and add my Tang’s back after they go through proper quarantine and after the tank fallow period.

I would stay within 0.4 - 0.5 ppm when using Cupramine.

Thanks humblefish, I am currently at .5 as per Salifert test.

I have taken to reading alot of your posts over the last 48 hours or so thank you for all the information and help to myself and everyone.

If it isn’t too much trouble can you clarify a few things for me.

Should my remaining fish ( 2 chromis and 2 clowns are all that’s left) make it through 30 days of copper and what point can I add them back to my main display which is now fallow.

And the more important question, when it comes time to re add my lost Tang’s what would you do to prepare them or what have you done differently with tangs over anything else.

Would you just start them on copper right away, perform a quick FW dip and then Rally bath then QT, or would you just put them in QT and monitor?

Wifey is very upset over the lost Tang’s as we all are and i want to best avoid a repeat scenario and start what’s looking like a tank reboot on the right foot.

Again thanks for all your contributions.

45 days for velvet; 76 days if you want to also be sure your DT is ich free.

Due to their susceptibility to parasites, I feel using copper or Chloroquine on all tangs is warranted. I would also deworm using Prazipro (or General Cure) before or after copper/Chloroquine treatment. The links below contain specific info on each treatment:

Ok so when the time comes I will be custom ordering the Tang’s so as soon as I get them regardless of whether signs are seen it’s best to perform a copper treatment, I’m assuming the I can forgo the FW dip and Rally bath and once copper is done do a prazi treatment then monitor for two weeks. If i understand that all correctly.

I would only do a FW dip if:
  1. You suspect flukes and want to use the FW dip as a diagnostic tool (marine flukes dislodge from their host and turn white once exposed to full freshwater.)
  2. To provide temporary relief for a “surface” parasite such as velvet, brook or uronema.
Rally is useful for providing temporary relief of a bacterial infection, prior to the fish being treated with antibiotics in QT.

Hey humble, thanks again for all the help. The remaining fish did survive and are back in the main tank and doing well.

I just picked up my new Tang’s and have them in quarantine (no treatment yet) if I remember correctly you had said it’s best to do a copper treatment with the Tang’s even if they currently look healthy yes?

I was going to fatten them up or at least attempt to prior to doing anything unless I see signs of anything over the next few days.

Thanks again for all the help.
