I used to have a 100 gallon saltwater tank.I had 2 clownfish, 1 sea urchin, and some live rock. Everything was going good for about 3 weeks. I came home and i notice brown algea (Diatoms). Once i started geting the brown algea out i had to replace the water. After that my water level was always low from evaporating from the sump. I stop the saltwater tank because i could not buy more salt. Now i am going to build a 75g reef tank would a magnium 350 be good enough for a filter? How many watts do i need for a reef tank (75g). Also would it be harder to maintain,

If you want an absolute basic tank I would skip the magnum and use that money to buy live rock and power heads. If you don't want a sump etc. and want to keep costs down you can just hang a filter on the back to put carbon and phosphate remover in, and use the live rock for biological filtration. For a reef tank on the cheap I would go for a low end 4 bulb t5. This hobby will cost money, and nothing seems to be cheap, but you can have a nice tank without needing all the bells and whistles. Everyone will have a different opinion on what you should get, but live rock, flow, light, and a heater are the basics.

thank you the good news is i already have the magnum and the light i just needed someones opinoin and the rock, powerheads, and the hang on filter is a good idea which i am going to buy. DO YOU KNOW A GOOD WEBSITE FOR LIVE ROCK OR BASE ROCK?????? how do you get a feedback score

+1 get a nice hang on Skimmer and powerheads and you'll be good. Do your water changes and keep up on regular husbandry, and be all good

Any hang-on filter will work. ebay may have some cheap ones but I would try something local first...like Walmart or Petco, etc. to save on shipping. As for the live rock - I would also do my best to find it locally as shipping 100lbs is usually the killer here. The feedback score comes from trading, buying, or selling corals with other forum members. Good luck with your tank set-up. Your efforts will be more than rewarding in the end :)

I would strongly suggest that you DIY sump. You can pick up glass tanks very cheap at your local LFS.
