Here's the plumbing I did for the return on my 40g build:

I know that right angles and long horizontal runs aren't ideal, but this was the only way I could make it work with the height of the sump. My return pump is way more powerful than I need so I think it will easily overcome the resistance created by the connectors, unions, etc. Will this setup work? Is there anything I'm not considering? There's no water in the tank yet so now's the time to make changes if I need to.

Any particular reason why you used 2 unions so close together? Those restrict a good amount of flow as well. I would have put one right by the stand which would have allowed easy removal of the pump still and wouldn't be as much of a restriction

I ran mine with the breaded PVC clear line.

I put the unions where they are because above the second one is a long stretch of glued pvc with several twists and turns. It was difficult to remove it without that one. I probably could have done without the one close to the pump but I wanted to be able to take it out easily for cleaning. Live and learn!

I'm going to clean up the pvc/fittings with some spray paint so it will look nice.

Not necessary...but a nice option is to have a tee and a valve on the discharge. It's handy for hooking up a short hose to pump water out...or isolate the tank and agitate the heck out of the sump when water change syphoning etc. Sometimes I hook up the hose and use it to blow off the rocks, overflow box etc. Won't affect the tank operation but is handy for husbandry sometimes

Cheers!
