looks like mine has finally bit the dust

Would you order new Apex classic or Apex EL and why

I have been looking to replace my classic with a 2016 main unit. I have deiced to just replace the hold unit with the Apex for the reason one can run everything like the classic with out the modules

my classic unit just died in August; can't really complain after 8 years. So I bought the new ApexEL, it was the right price and has everything I need, none of the expensive probes that don't really work anyway. I am very happy with the decision.

The classic is a fantastic value. The only "big" difference in the apex 2016 or EL is that there is individual outlet power monitoring (versus total power), built in wifi (You can use a cheap wifi adapter for the classic), and that the el/2016 will be compatible with the upcoming apex trident.

Thanks for input. I got an RMA to return mine after apex support tempted to trouble shoot they said it’s tge “hardware” so the brain. Can be 35-150 to fix or they offer replacement on the cheap

I'd absolutely not get a classic anymore - just too likely to be future limiting. Trident won't work with the classic, and I'd imagine there will be other new stuff that won't either,

I am setting up a 120, there were no controllers the last time I had an aquarium. I settled, after much debate on the Apex El. I do not want to buy a second hand controller which is out of business. I do not want to buy a Neptune classic or junior as the savings are not enough to justify a compatibility issue even with the current clearance. The EL also has integrated wifi which makes access a little easier if you have a home network (previous jr and lite did not). I chose the El over the standard as I really do not expect to run ozone and that seemed to be the only advantage. As far as how it works, I cannot tell you as I have not hooked it up yet. I expect it to work well. I also had a long debate about the Tunze ato vs apex atk, went with the tunze as BRS just put them on sale for 20 dollars cheaper. The APEX was more integrated and has access for some water alarms and extra sensors. I thought this would be worth it for the same money in spite of reports of more difficulty with setup and troublesome programming. Then someone dropped the price and the simpler option looked more attractive. Hope this helps.
