Need nutrient export ideas for my 40g

Yes, there's a chart to help you out. Take your baseline nitrate reading then start low and do daily dose. Take weekly reading and adjust up or down. Obviously as you add stock and feeding changes you will adjust. It's the easiest type of carbon dosing because you can dial it in pretty easily. I recommend weekly nitrate test and small changes in dosage and you'll be happy.
Thanks! I checked out the chart. Should I start out even lower than what they recommend to be safe? My tank is new and doesn't have lights so there's no algae, just high nitrates. Does that matter?

Algae or not it doesn't matter, it's about managing nitrates right. You may be jumping the gun a bit, you haven;t really let your algae scrubber settle in. You might find that is all you need. When I added an algae reactor to my 90g reef, I ended up pulling the nopox; nitrates run at about 10 or so now. I'd let the scrubber kick in and see where you are at after that. Starting dosage at the low end is always safest, some people do get issues, but it's almost always associated with over dosing.

I ordered some Nopox. I'll wait a few weeks to see if the scrubber works. So far no algae.

I am on VSV dosing with a twist, and I can keep nutrients low enough for my mixed reef tank. Have a look at my tank build. The signature is the link. Maybe it will suit your taste.

I didn't see the link in your signature. Could you please send it. I'd love to take a look!

Is it normal to have zero algae after 4-5 days of using it? Absolutely none yet. I run it 20 hours/day.

What are your parameters, you do need some NH3 and PO4. I'm not familiar with that scrubber but I did a DIY knock off of the Santa Monica HOG and I think it was well over a week before I started to get growth.

PO4 is between 0 and .03-.04ppm when gfo needs to be changed. It's totally under control. Nitrates are 20-25ppm. That's what I want to lower.
