Im sure this question gets asked all the time so I apologize in advance. However I have not found any threads like this that are recent and reflect the choices in new technology.

My primary goal is high quality macro shots of corals. From what Ive learned so far the 100mm 2.8f lens is optimal for this purpose. Im looking for recomendations on a good camera body to go with it. Trying to stay as close to $1000 as possible. I am leaning toward Cannon products.

As far as the lens goes, Id like opinions on whether the IS (image stabilization ) is worth the extra $200-300. Also feelings on buying used off ebay or craigslist. Thanks in advance!

For tripod mounted macro shot the Canon non IS version is fine and just as sharp. It's what I use, take a look at my photos. For a used Canon body a crop sensor body will deliver more depth of field. I just sold a mint 60d for $350 and purchased a new 80d for just over your budget. If you save money on the lens you could purchase a new 80d it has wi fi with a great AP for remote shooting. Otherwise look for a used 70d or 7d.

The rebel is a fine camera. You will need a macro lens for good macro shots, anything else will be a compromise. The 100mm Macro is only 599.00 if that's too much see how much you can save on a good used one.
