I'm in the middle of a 40g build and want to research everything. What's a good surge protector for this setup? I don't have a controller and won't for a while. Is there anything in particular I should look for for a saltwater setup or are they all basically the same?

Get an apex system and you have a all in one controller and surge protector

I plan to at some point but it's not in my budget right now. I'm looking for alternatives.

I believe bought a cheap day/night one from Amazon.

Two things. It is an on off system. The days will be on OR the nights will be on. No ramping up and down. Both day plugs will be on or both nights.

Second, you will have to set it and let it run for a couple of days before it will start turning the lights on and off.

Hope this helps.

Tripp lite makes some good ones if you want something a little more heavy duty.
Thanks. I just want something safe until I can upgrade to an apex, which has its own. I'm looking for about 8 outlets. I only need plugs, no other bells and whistles. I'm going to check out Amazon.

Sell your soul is one options, but I would go with find a side job you can do to get the cash flow. Some thing very temporary. We have our own business, and I have been working and consulting on the side for the past year to finance my build. mistakes, and fixes for those mistakes. That or hit home depot and buy a Belkin's surge protector to temp it. Belkin's warranty everything if you have a failure. out of pocket you are looking at $20

I'm building as I go so I can get the equipment I really want. I've run a 12g nano for 5 yrs without a controller so I'm not worried. I'm waiting on corals too so I can get the lights I want. I work and raise two kids, so no time for a side job.

I'm setting up my 90 right now and I just bought two surge protectors off amazon 20 bux any one will do IMO it's a surge protector I would just get one with individual switches for easy on off for skimmer return ect..
