Okay, I am the Vice President of my reef club and my wife and i are a couple of zoa/paly lovers. We just think they are some of the most colorful and easy to keep (in most cases) corals out there plus they grow into amazing looking colonies. We tend to buy mostly "named" zoas/palys and have a decent collection (nothing super rare but quality named corals) and whenever someone in our club posts that they are looking for some nice zoas/palys I'll snap some pictures and write the names of what we have an post it. This leads me to my dilemma...I would like to think i have some pretty thick skin but this is getting to the irritating point. There are a few zoa/paly haters in our club including our President and they absolutely can't stand the fact that there are some pretty funky and creative names for the multitude of zoas/palys out there...they are so called natural reef keepers and dislike the naming of any coral but especially the Z's/P's and think that people just use the names to charge more money for them and I can agree that I don't like that idea but I totally have no problem with people naming them for identification purposes as there are so many out there and I have tried to explain this to these haters but it's like talking to a brick wall...they just don't hear and continue to make fun of the names I list when listing my z's/p's for people (in fact our president just recently said he is going to copyright the name Sunrise of the Epic Arctic Ape and if someone asks him what it is he's going to say the name of a soon to be discovered zoa/paly) so what can I do, any ammunition I could fight back with would be appreciated. I'd like to call them a bunch of ignorant copral hicks but I need to keep it civil for the clubs sake as well as not making it look like a bunch of 12 year olds name calling . I need stuff that's accurate but also that will get a subtle jab in to the haters just to make them feel stupid on occassion for bashing the Z's/P's. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've run out of snappy comebacks to them :crossedlips: .

meh, there's always haters. I got no one hating on me tho since i got every coral in the game right now (not name game but every type zoa, sps, lps). so you're telling me those guys don't have any "named" stuff? psht.

From what I have seen, the majority of the people who "hate" on named Zoas/Palys are the people who cant afford to buy them. But this is an age-old debate in which all logic ceases to penetrate the thick skulls of the haters. I would like to see someone offer them a free Utter Chaos / Rasta / etc frag and see if they turn it down.

^^ True that. Im not turning down a free polyp of those. Prices that cant be met are what cause haterz to do what they do, just keep it civil at the club and dont sweat them

There's always going to be haters...I would just ignore them because it's a battle you won't win.

I reality they are entitled to think any way they want and its a lost cause to challenge them........I personally just ignore them.

I guess it's like politics, their views aren't going to change until them have some life altering event. Let them wallow in their own hate.

Why don't you start a contest, who ever can name the Zoa gets it for free. See how they react to that!

i get that all the time until they get something they can put a name to it

you use the club for the positive and just ignore them and kill them with kindness

if it was me i would ask them if they wanted to cry about something else

beat them at there own game become president

Oh I have been ignoring them as best I can...I just get sick of the peanut gallery chiming in when I start to mention the name zoas/palys I have. They just believe that no zoa/paly should be expensive and have names...a Purple Hornet should be just a purple zoa with a purple and yellow skirt and center or a Whammin Watermelon should just be a green skirted zoa with a red center etc. but heaven forbid they should be named as they view that as the root of all evil that drives the price through the roof. I still preach that the name is merely a way to identify the zoas/palys from each other as there are so many and that the prices are based on how rare the particular polyp is along with different color variations but it's like talking to the wall...they just hear what they want to hear and that's that. Oh well, like everyone said...they are entitled to their opinion and if they want to be zoa/paly ignorant that's their perogative .

Nah, they have decent corals in their tanks too, i have no idea what drives their zoa ire but i wish they'd just practice the old addage of "if you have nothing good to say don't say anything". Like many have said...if they don't like the zoa/paly names why comment on the post, why not just ignore it as not everyone shares their opinions. I know that I personally don't charge an arm and a leg for my zoas/palys that i sell to other club members as i view it as I'm making the club more coral rich by spreading some quality corals around to other members so they can grow them in their tanks and in turn can pass them on...make sense to me :).

I'd like to see someone work with a list of the nicest corals available which they'd like to obtain without using any sort of trade name to find them.

*"Can someone direct me to the amazing Palythoa species I saw last week? Well, they're pink. No, not a solid pink like that. Not so much glittery; more mottled. No, not dual-toned. They have a dark background, and green skirts too come to think of it. Medium-large polyps. We're talking bright pink. No, not those little pink Indo polyps that come in all the time, something else. Come on, where do I find them. Who has them? A name? No, I don't care for names. No good can come of that."

Try googling mottled pink palythoa with green skirts. Then try Tyree Space Monster or Space Monster palythoa, and see which gets you more helpful results faster. Forget the fact that they wouldn't pay the price. Just the practical issue of locating a source for a particularly exceptional/desirable zoa makes naming almost a necessity. If we were all local to each other and could drive to any possible source, that would be different, but we're spread across the globe with our various corals and need a way to get results out of a search engine/online community.

For many it comes down to price, and that's their prerogative. Reefing isn't cheap, period, so I don't see why anyone would be arguing that a coral should be "inexpensive". It's a living, growing work of art. Hard to put a price on that. If they don't want to pay higher prices for the exceptional pieces, then they are free to settle for the same whammin's and dragon eyes and brownish zoas that have been coming into mom & pop shops for the last decade.

If they just don't like zoas/palys, that's their deal; not everyone is going to like them, but they should just keep that to themselves and be polite. If it's the names they have a problem with, too bad! Just ignore them either way. If they are really being a problem, you should privately pm them instead of hashing it out publicly and explain they are being hurtful/aggravating and ask them to please show some courtesy to a fellow club member. You have a right to sell and others have the right to buy if they want to, with or without names.

yeahhh Zack. way to set things straight!! :sure:

So very eloquent! Thank you :)

I used to hate zoas until I got my hands on a few high end types. Now I like them better than my SPS but I still like them!
