Hi everyone in R2R, I’m currently quarantining a clownfish and a firefish. I just finished my two weeks for cupramine and am starting general cure for internal parasites as soon as the copper is removed.

I’ve read here that 14 days of Copper might not be sufficient to eradicate ich, I haven’t seen any external symptoms or behavior symptoms that lead me to believe ich is present in the Qt, but I’m pretty sure one of the fish in the QT who is no longer alive, may have had it.

My DT has been fallow for about 12 weeks now.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Using Curpramine brand of copper

Many here would advise you to continue the copper for 30 days. If you pull them after 14 they need to go into a new, fresh QT for 10-14 days of observation anyway. Good on you for taking such good care of your fish.

Would keeping them in the current QT for observation along with treating the parasites be an option? Like I said I’m not 100% sure ich is present in the tank, only seen something similar on a fish from a while ago, and none of the fish I have right now have shown any symptoms, thanks again btw

Yes, but treat with copper for 30 days if you have just 1 QT to work with. After the 30 days, you can lower the Cu, observe and treat with General Cure.

Would i be able to do this in reverse order? my clownfishs parasites are very advanced and she is extremely skinny, id like to fatten her up before i start another copper treatment

Also, i saw in a thread a few months back that the ich cysts are essentially sterilized after 30 days of copper? is this true in your opinion?

It's what we call treating prophylactically. You tremendously reduce the chances of your fish having or becoming carriers of disease that could come back to haunt them if the disease re occurs or new fish you add into the tank system.
Here's a great post by Humbefish that does a much better job of explaining the quarantine usage than I could. Hope this helps a bit. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/#post-2177961

Yes, if she has parasites, you can stop the copper treatment, remove the copper from the water and treat for parasites. Then you will have to do copper again for the whole 30 days. Don't know if it sterilizes the cysts, I believe the free swimming ones are killed by the copper, but not the ones already on/in the fish.

@Humblefish , are you aware if 30 days of copper is able to kill the cysts and prevent then from producing viable parasites?

It is if at therapeutic levels and we are discussing either ich or velvet.
