I've cycled my 470 gallon system. I have a few fish and tiny piece of birds nest.

About a week ago these started showing up on the glass. I would clean them off and then within 30 min, they would be back stuck on the glass. They look like clear little jelly starfish or something. Are they hydroids?

This first pic is one I found off of Google cause I can't get my camera to focus on them. There are literally 10's of thousands of these things.

it's best to get rid of them if you can, suck it out with a turkey baster or siphon hose. I have them in my tank and they've never bothered anything, but most consider them a pest.

I'm telling you, there is literally 100,000 of these things in the tank. They appeared fairly quickly. Is there anything that eats them?

hmm.. not sure about predators.. they're basically jellyfish, they go through all the stages from polyp to medusa and everything inbetween.. I'd get rid of the ones you can get rid of and not worry too much about the rest.. I rarely see any in my tank and I had a huge bloom of them about a year ago.. you could siphon them out, run your siphon hose over filter floss before going into a bucket, then you can put that water back into the tank..

after a quick google, apparently there is some species of nudi's that eat hydroids... some people claim angels will eat them..

I'm telling you. There is literally 100,000 of them or more in the tank. In a 6 inch X 6 inch square on the front panel, I counted over 300. My tank is 8 feet long and I can see them covered all over the back wall as well.

are you sure its not those little living pods/organism since you just got done cycling? i cant think of the name, but there a good thing, a sign your tank is maturing

That's what I thought they were. But then if you look at them, they look like starfish. They all have legs and are clear.

they can reproduce rather quickly, if you want to get rid of them completely it's going to take a lot of work (and likely impossible, but they could be maintained).. I just live with them and have not experienced any negatives.. YMMV..

I don't think this is something I can deal with. I wipe the panels off and then within 30 min, they are all back. It's crazy. Most of them have 4-6 legs.

Is your tank fairly new if so don't worrie they will disappear over time I had the same problem..

they feed off of free floating nutrients in the water, so the cleaner your water is the less you should have.. but yes, mine bloomed rapidly for a month or so then subsided.. I still have them and still see them from time to time, but not like I use to. many times they hitchhike in on chaeto and other macro algaes..

I know it's been a few months, I'm just wondering how your hydroids problem played out? We're you able to get rid of them or did they go away on their own or get worse etc..

This is my 90g tank now 3 weeks into a cycle... I'm looking for options!
