Do what's easiest. You could also cover the tank with eggcrate and/or window screening.You could run 2 bulbs for your desired photoperiod and ramp the other 4 bulbs up.
In my tank I can tell if an sps is getting too much light. They'll start to lighten up. Sometimes I move them, other times I just leave them and eventually the color comes back.
